IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In my opinion both of them are correct but environmental problem is far more bigger than loss of particular species of plants and animals . There are factors effecting environmental problems. Yes loss of particular species are one of them but not only. Reasons for environmental problems include , different types of pollution like Air pollution , Smoke pollution , Deforestation and Chloro-floro carbons etc.

If i talk about causes of air pollution there are many causes specially to much vehicles on road and smoke coming out of factories. Government should take actions against such things. With development in technology we should also switch to electric cars rather than fuel consuming cars .

Government should launch a campaign for planting trees and we should support government because because government alone can't work on that. And government should introduce new laws to stop deforestation . And we should also switch to safer ways of producing electricity rather than continuing old combustion of coals.

We have lost many birds and animals which were protecting our environment in different ways. But we need to focus more on environmental problems by forgetting what we lost . Now we should focus on what we have.

We as a society should stand up to protect our environmment because the way things are going our future generation won't be able to survive. . It can also cause different types of disabilities to our coming generations.

In conclussion i will say both the opinions are correct but we should work on it.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both views, but the development is superficial. While you mention the loss of species and other environmental issues like pollution, the arguments are not well-supported with specific examples or logical depth. The position is stated in the introduction, but it lacks a clear, sustained focus throughout the body paragraphs. The discussion of 'other environmental problems' is quite general, and the connection between the loss of species and the broader environmental context is not fully explored. To improve, ensure each paragraph develops a single clear idea with specific evidence or reasoning, rather than listing multiple points briefly.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression between them is weak. The transition between discussing pollution and the loss of species is abrupt. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often repetitive or misused, such as the frequent use of 'and' to start sentences or the repetitive structure of 'Government should'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the overall flow is mechanical. To improve, use a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in contrast') and ensure that each paragraph builds logically upon the previous one to create a cohesive argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and often repetitive. You rely on basic terms like 'environmental problems' and 'things' throughout the text. There are also inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'far more bigger' (which is grammatically incorrect and redundant) and 'smoke pollution'. Some terms are used in a way that lacks precision, such as 'combustion of coals'. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more precise academic vocabulary and collocations, such as 'biodiversity loss', 'mitigation strategies', or 'sustainable energy sources', and avoid informal phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are issues with subject-verb agreement ('factors effecting', 'loss of particular species are'), punctuation (spaces before periods, missing commas), and sentence structure (e.g., 'specially to much vehicles'). The range of structures is limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences. Complex sentences are attempted but often contain errors, such as 'the way things are going our future generation won't be able to survive'. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, subject-verb agreement, and the correct use of articles and prepositions.
