Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people believe that the extinction of particular species of plants and animals is the main environmental problem of our time. However, other argue that there are more serious environmental issues. this essay will discuss both views, and I believe that climate change and population are more important problem.

On the one hand the loss of animal and plants species is serious environmental concerns. Many species are becoming endangered or extinct because of deforestation, hunting and pollution. when forest are destroyed animals' loss their natural habitat and source of food. this can reduce their problem and disturb the natural balance of ecosystems. For example, if an important species disappears other animals and plants that depend on it may also be affected. Therefore, protecting endangered species is essential for maintaining biodiversity.

On the other hand, there are other environmental problems that can have a much wider impact. Climate Change, air pollution and water pollution are affecting millions of peoples around the world. Global warming can use extreme heat, flood, drought and rising sea level. Similarly polluted air can cause serious health problem, while contaminated water can also affect both animals and humans. These problems can damage entire communities and economies. Therefore, I believe that climate change and pollution are more urgent environmental issue.

In conclusion, the disappearance of plants and animals is certainly important environmental problem because it damages biodiversity and ecosystem. However, I believe that Climate change and pollution are more serious because they affect the environment, human health and their lives of millions of people on much on the scale.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and logically extended, such as the discussion on biodiversity loss versus the broader impact of climate change. However, the development is somewhat brief; for instance, the mention of 'population' in the introduction is not fully explored in the body paragraphs. To reach a higher band, ensure that every point mentioned in the introduction is supported by a dedicated argument in the body. The position is consistent throughout, and the conclusion effectively synthesizes the arguments presented.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Therefore' are used to guide the reader. However, there are instances where the flow is slightly mechanical, and some referencing is imprecise (e.g., 'their lives of millions of people'). Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive links and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer back to their intended antecedents to improve the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There is some attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'biodiversity', 'ecosystems', and 'deforestation'. However, there are several word-choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'reduce their problem' (likely meant 'reduce their population') and 'on much on the scale'. The range is sufficient but lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Expanding the use of collocations and more precise academic terminology would significantly enhance the quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('animals' loss their natural habitat'), article usage ('the loss of animal and plants species'), and pluralization ('serious environmental concerns' should be 'a serious environmental concern'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing commas after introductory phrases. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would be highly beneficial.
