IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
A segment of population believes that ecosystem destruction had only cause of reduction of fauna and flora. On the other hand, some members are of the view that there are more crucial ecosystem problems.
I will discuss both the views in the forthcoming paragraphs and firmly believe that there are more causes to the natural habitat.
Highlighting the first aspect people think specific decline in the species can result into loss of habitat as most animals and plants are dependent on one particular species for their living if any one of them is endandgered then whole ecosystem got disturbed.
Shifting to other aspect that there are more causes like deforestation, distinctive pollution like air water, industralization, overpopulation, overconsumption, climate change, mining and resources extraction, urbanization and many more which results in depletion of natural lifeforms. All these factors have contibuting role which distrubs the environmental system. the population is rapidly escalating and is therefore consuming more and expoliting the natural resources for survival for instace cutting the forests and constructing colonies and flats for living. Large amount of deforestation leads to floods and low oxygen levels. I firlmy agreee that these all factors play crucial role in destroying the natural habitat of the earth. To racpitulate in short it can be concluded that there are several other reasons which are more responsible for the environment loss rather than depending on one factor only. We should be more concerned about them all and seek measures to prevent the disturbance caused by them in future and adapt sustainable methods.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on whether the loss of specific species is the main environmental problem or if other issues are more significant, while also providing a clear personal opinion. The writer establishes a position in the introduction and maintains it through to the conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the discussion of alternative environmental problems lists several issues like 'deforestation, distinctive pollution like air water, industralization, overpopulation' without sufficiently extending or exploring them with detailed examples. The argument remains somewhat superficial in places, preventing it from reaching a higher band. Nevertheless, the core requirements of the prompt are met adequately, aligning with the descriptors for Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to follow a standard essay structure, including an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, paragraphing and logical progression are frequently hindered by poor transitions and run-on sentences. For example, sentences such as 'Shifting to other aspect that there are more causes like deforestation...' group multiple distinct ideas together without appropriate division. Cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or misused, such as 'To racpitulate in short', which contains a severe spelling error and awkward phrasing. Referencing is also occasionally unclear. While the progression of ideas is discernible, the structural and cohesive flaws place this text firmly at Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common and topic-specific terms such as 'ecosystem', 'industrialization', 'overconsumption', and 'sustainable methods'. However, there are frequent errors in word choice, collocation, and spelling throughout the response. Examples include 'endandgered' (endangered), 'distrubs' (disturbs), 'contibuting role' (contributory role), 'expoliting' (exploiting), and 'racpitulate' (recapitulate). Furthermore, phrasing such as 'segment of population' and 'distinctive pollution like air water' demonstrates limited lexical precision. These errors occasionally cause strain for the reader, matching the characteristics of Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar and punctuation is weak. The text contains numerous grammatical errors, missing articles, and punctuation flaws that impede readability. For instance, the opening sentence 'A segment of population believes that ecosystem destruction had only cause of reduction of fauna and flora' contains multiple errors in article usage and verb tense. Other notable issues include run-on sentences like 'All these factors have contibuting role which distrubs the environmental system. the population is rapidly escalating...' and punctuation omissions such as 'I firlmy agreee'. Because complex structures frequently contain errors and simple sentences lack accuracy, the grammar performance reflects a Band 5.0 level.
