IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

Its always argued that lost of species is not main problem but other major environmental problems are biggest issues to worry about.

But in my case im equally concerned about both of arguements.

If we look deeply into the matter both the problems wether its loss of species or other environmental issues like pollution , deforestretion etc are the matter of equal importance.

But its not wrong to say that exticntion of species in somewhat natural process too for example if an animal has higher mortality rate than birth rate then it will go extinct but its does not mean we leave the matter to nature we should protect them such as banning hunting and we can monitor them for their preservation and for other environmental problems we are responsible we should limit use of plastic exrta use of non renewable energy and and should move to eco friendly products.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response touches upon both views regarding whether species loss is the primary environmental issue, acknowledging arguments for both sides and offering a personal opinion. However, the task achievement is severely restricted by the word count. The length requirement is not met, as the response contains only 150 words compared to the minimum of 250 words. Because of this extreme under-length, ideas are very brief and underdeveloped. While the student attempts to address all parts of the prompt, the lack of extension and detail prevents the response from scoring higher than a Band 4.0. To improve, the student must ensure they write at least 250 words, fully expanding on their arguments with detailed examples and comprehensive reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.5

The text suffers from a lack of proper paragraphing, as it is presented in a single, block-like structure rather than distinct paragraphs for introduction, body points, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are minimal and repetitive, relying heavily on words like 'But' and 'and' to connect ideas, which makes the flow mechanical. While the general progression of thought can be tentatively followed, referencing is not always clear, particularly with pronouns and transitional phrases. To reach a higher band, the student needs to organise their essay into clear paragraphs, each with a central topic, and utilise a wider range of sophisticated cohesive devices to guide the reader smoothly through the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.5

The lexical range is quite limited and repetitive. The student uses basic vocabulary such as 'problem', 'matter', and 'environmental', alongside several spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'lost' instead of 'loss', 'wether' instead of 'whether', 'deforestretion', 'exticntion', and 'exrta'. These errors demonstrate a lack of precision and control over less common vocabulary. Although the meaning is generally understandable despite these flaws, the vocabulary is insufficient to discuss complex topics flexibly. To improve, the student should expand their vocabulary related to environmental issues and practice accurate spelling and collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

Grammatically, the response shows a very limited range of structures. Most sentences are simple or poorly coordinated with excessive use of conjunctions like 'and'. There are frequent punctuation errors, such as missing apostrophes in contractions ('Its', 'im', 'does not'), missing commas, and run-on sentences like 'if an animal has higher mortality rate than birth rate then it will go extinct but its does not mean we leave the matter to nature we should protect them'. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, the student must focus on sentence boundaries, punctuation rules, and incorporating a greater variety of complex grammatical structures accurately.
