Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The response attempts to discuss both views regarding whether species loss is the most crucial environmental problem, along with a personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is limited and somewhat confused. The student misinterprets the prompt in places, arguing that some plants and animals cause damage rather than focusing fully on the debate surrounding biodiversity loss versus other global environmental issues. Furthermore, the response is incomplete, stopping abruptly at 249 words, which fails to meet the 250-word minimum requirement. This under-length results in a direct penalty to Task Achievement, as the conclusion and final points are missing entirely. To improve, the writer must ensure they fully address all parts of the prompt, expand their arguments logically without digressing into irrelevant claims about harmful plants and snakes, and consistently write past the minimum word count.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.5
The essay displays some basic attempts at logical organisation with transitional markers such as 'Firstly' and 'Secondly', but the overall progression is weak. Paragraphing is poorly handled, with the entire body of the essay essentially compressed into a single massive block of text despite initial attempts at signposting. Cohesive devices are repetitive and often inaccurate, such as 'At last, we have to need to decide...' leading into an unfinished sentence. Referencing is frequently unclear, and the lack of a proper conclusion disrupts the flow of the text. To enhance cohesion, the writer should break thoughts down into distinct, well-structured paragraphs, use a wider variety of cohesive ties naturally, and ensure every sentence connects logically to the central theme.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is basic and heavily repetitive, demonstrating a restricted range. The student relies on elementary terms and makes frequent word-choice and collocation errors, such as 'misplaced' instead of 'loss', 'thoughts' instead of 'thought' or 'think', and 'cutting' instead of 'bites' or 'venom'. Phrases like 'cause to remove water' and 'rare for fragrance to spread it' show a lack of precision and unnatural phrasing. There are also spelling errors like 'prespective' and 'benefical'. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey a rudimentary message, the numerous lexical inaccuracies and limited range prevent the writer from achieving a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The grammatical structure of the essay is heavily flawed, dominated by frequent errors that often impede comprehension. The writer struggles with basic subject-verb agreement and tense consistency, as seen in phrases like 'Majority of inhabitants thinks' and 'plants also gave fruits'. Complex structures are attempted but are generally faulty, such as run-on sentences joined poorly with coordinating conjunctions or relative clauses (e.g., 'in zoo, different types of animals are captured such as... and in nursery farm there are...'). Punctuation is also problematic, with missing periods and unfinished clauses. A wider mix of accurate simple and complex forms with close attention to basic grammar rules is required to move up the bands.
