Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to discuss both views on environmental problems and state an opinion, partially covering the requirements of the prompt. However, the student's response contains 238 words, failing to meet the minimum 250-word requirement, which negatively impacts Task Achievement. Furthermore, the development of ideas is limited and somewhat repetitive. While the writer mentions the loss of species and climate change, the arguments lack sufficient extension and concrete supporting details. For instance, the transition into climate change is abrupt and poorly integrated. Because the prompt asks to discuss both views and give an opinion, the superficial treatment of the competing views combined with the under-length penalty places this response at a Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay displays some overall organization, attempting an introduction, body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion, but it suffers from poor paragraphing and a lack of clear progression. The second paragraph groups disparate ideas together—combining species extinction with climate change—which disrupts the flow of argument. Cohesive devices are frequently misused, mechanical, or awkward, such as starting sentences with 'Owing to,' or 'Which gives improve to some difficuties.' Furthermore, referencing is sometimes unclear, and the essay lacks a proper concluding paragraph, trailing off prematurely. These deficiencies in logical sequencing and cohesive control align closely with the Band 5 descriptor.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student uses a limited vocabulary with noticeable errors that occasionally impede communication. While there are attempts at less common environmental terminology such as 'biodiversity,' 'extinction,' 'habitat loss,' and 'global warming,' these are often marred by spelling and word-form errors (e.g., 'belive', 'environment issues', 'exinction', 'climat change', 'spesices'). Collocations are frequently unnatural, as seen in phrases like 'reduces chemical water and polluted smoke' or 'gives improve to some difficuties.' Because the lexical range is narrow and frequent spelling and word-choice errors cause difficulty for the reader, a Band 5.0 is appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The grammatical range is quite limited, consisting mostly of simple and attempted complex sentences that are frequently faulty. There are persistent errors in basic grammar, subject-verb agreement, and punctuation. Examples include 'the major environment issues... is loss pf especially species,' 'While Others say that the numerous critical environment problems' (which lacks a main verb), and 'its has a direct effect for humans.' Relative clauses are misused, as in 'Which many in individuals are sick.' Frequent errors in structure and punctuation cause significant difficulty for the reader, reflecting the characteristics of Band 5.
