Student answer (Band 5.0)

It is argued that, many individuals are believing that the main environmental issue is becoming the loss of time and of a particular species of plants and animals, whereas others believe that there are many other significant issues regarding environment. I believe that apart from damaging to environment through plants and animals there are many other factors which is destroying the surroundings.

First of all, one of the most significant factor is cutting down of trees is affecting the environment deeply. People are cutting down the forests for development of the city and construct the buildings whiich affects the loss of plants and the house for many birds and species, whereas it leads to one of the most imprtant factor to environmental problems. Secondly, using chemical products are also effect the environment. For example, to protect the fruits and vegetables from the insects, farmers are using fertilizers and chemical products are also destroying the agricultural land.

Additionally, the human's are also affecting the environment through the transportation facilities, they did not use the public transport, instead of personal vehicles which leads to traffic congestion and the various pollutions, such as air pollution and noise pollution. The different types of pollution effects the public health, and the bad habits of the people such as smoking, alcohol also involved in public health, which directly and indirectly damages the environment.

In conclusion, I believe that there are many other factors destroying the environment rather than particular species of plants and animals. Government should plants the trees and help the citizens to plant more by advertising and campaigns to protect the environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses both views required by the prompt—discussing whether the loss of species is the main environmental problem or if other problems are more important—and clearly states the writer's own opinion that other factors are more significant. The ideas are generally relevant, mentioning deforestation, chemical usage, and transportation. However, these ideas are somewhat under-developed and tend to drift into unrelated issues, such as mentioning that bad habits like smoking and alcohol damage public health in the third paragraph. While the prompt asks for a discussion of environmental problems, the inclusion of personal lifestyle habits stretches the topic slightly off-course. Furthermore, the argument lacks depth in comparing the two views directly. Consequently, the task response aligns well with the Band 5.0 descriptors, where the task is addressed, but certain aspects lack full development and clarity.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay displays some organizational structure with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, and uses basic transition signals such as First of all, Secondly, Additionally, and In conclusion. However, overall progression is hindered by awkward phrasing and loose links between sentences. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal cohesion of paragraphs is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in sentences starting with 'whereas it leads to' or 'which is destroying the surroundings' where the antecedent is ambiguous. There is also noticeable repetition in how ideas are introduced. This level of organisation and cohesive control matches the Band 5.0 criteria, where there is some overall structure, but cohesive devices are frequently inaccurate or inadequately managed.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student uses a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating basic ideas related to the environment, such as 'forests', 'development of the city', 'fertilizers', and 'air pollution'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices throughout the text, such as 'loss of time' in the opening sentence, 'damaging to environment', and 'different types of pollution effects the public health'. Word formation errors are also present, such as using 'human's' instead of 'humans'. The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, and these errors occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader. Therefore, the lexical resource is best evaluated at a Band 5.0 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and some attempts at complex sentence forms, but these attempts are frequently faulty. There are persistent grammatical errors throughout the response, including tense and verb agreement issues, such as 'individuals are believing', 'cutting down of trees is affecting', and 'using chemical products are also effect the environment'. Punctuation and sentence boundaries are also weak, with long, run-on sentences containing multiple clauses linked incorrectly, such as in the third paragraph regarding transportation and public health habits. Because there is a limited range of accurate structures and frequent errors that occasionally impede understanding, this performance corresponds to a Band 5.0 score.
