IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Environmental problems have become a major concern around the world. Some people believe that loss od particular species of plant and animals is the most serious environmental prbolem whereas others argue that, there are more pressing problems. This essay will discuss both views before giving my opinion.

On the one hand, the extinction of plants and animals can have serious consequences for the environment. Every species plays a role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem. When a particular animal and plants disappears , it can affect other species that depend on it for food or survival. For instances, the disappearance of bees and other insects could have a significant impact on argicultural beacuse they are importamt for pollination. Furthermore, once a species becomes extinct its difficult to bring it back.

On the other hand, there are several environmental problems that may have a more immediate and widespeared impact on human life. Climate change, water pollution, air pollution and defoerstation are major examples. In particular, global warming is causing rising temperatures, extreme weather events, rising sea levels. Air pollution is a also serious problem in many large cities. These issue effects millions of people directly and can also contribute to the loss of wildlife and natural habitats.

In my opinion, although the loss of individual speicies is a serious problem, broared environmental issues such as climate change, air pollution and water pollution deserve greater attention because they affect both humans and ecosystems on much larger scale.

In conclusion, the extinction plants and animals is an important environmental concerns, but climate change, pollution and habitat destruction are also major threats. Governments and individuals should therefore take action to adress these problems and protect the environment for future genaration.
