Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response demonstrates a severe lack of task engagement. Rather than addressing the specific prompt concerning whether the loss of particular plant and animal species is the main environmental problem compared to others, the student has relied heavily on a generic template. The phrases 'loss of some species and importance envionmental problem' are awkwardly inserted throughout the essay as a substitution for addressing the actual topic, indicating a complete failure to develop relevant ideas or present a clear position. The arguments are circular, vague, and devoid of any specific examples or real-world application. Consequently, the response does not address all parts of the task appropriately and falls significantly short of the descriptive criteria for higher bands.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
Despite the severe content limitations, the essay exhibits a structured framework with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to delineate the different sections of the text. However, cohesion is heavily mechanical and repetitive, relying on formulaic transition phrases such as 'At the outset,' 'Conversely,' and 'In conclusion.' Furthermore, referencing is severely impaired because the repeated substitution phrases do not logically connect to form a coherent progression of ideas. While the overall visual structure mimics an academic essay, the internal logical progression fails to build a cohesive argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 3.5
The lexical range is extremely restricted and heavily dependent on repetitive boilerplate phrases. The student makes numerous severe lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'importance envionmental problem' (with a spelling error) repeated verbatim multiple times throughout the response. There is a lack of flexibility, precision, or awareness of appropriate academic style. Vocabulary is used mechanically rather than meaningfully to convey ideas, resulting in language that significantly strains the reader and fails to demonstrate a functional vocabulary for an academic writing task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The essay displays a moderate range of complex sentence structures, such as 'While one school of thought maintains that... another contends that...' and 'Although the arguments presented by... I remain of the view that...'. However, the grammatical accuracy within these structures is severely undermined by the nonsensical insertion of template phrases that disrupt syntactic integrity. There are noticeable errors in word forms and spelling ('envionmental'). While some complex forms are attempted, the high frequency of unnatural phrasing and repetitive structural patterns limits the overall control and accuracy of grammar.
