Student answer (Band 6.0)
The environmental issues are indeniably getting out of hand. While some people believe that the most important problem is the extinction of certain species of plants and animals, others would argue that there are bigger concerns when it comes to the environment such as pollution.
One argument says that we are loosing particular plants and animals by the day and that is one great concern. In fact, nature is loosing its diversity. Hundreds of animals are going extint for no reason but the carelessness of humans. In addition, the loss of plant species is becoming more serious .That loss of the Faune and Flore of the earth is creating an irriversible environmental imbalance. However, that alone couldn't be the more important issue than pollution.
Advocates of the other school of thought are convinced that pollution is killing our nature's health. There are different yet equally dangerous kinds of pollution: sea pollution, air pollution, and land pollution. Starting with water pollution, Humans are harming the seas as they made ships and yachts that let their toxic fuel into the sea which does contribute to the extinction of a lot of sea creatures. Add to that, all the tons of rubbish and plastic waste are being thrown in seas or forests. A chemical product like plastic takes centuries to break down in the environment, whcih makes land pollution a bigger concern. Last but not least, air pollution is caused by the emission of carbon dyoxyde by cars, ships and even industries which led to the green house effect contributing to climate changes. Those are the reasons why i support this school of thought and i would argue that pollution is the main and most serious environmental issue.
In a nutshell, even though the extinction of certain Faune and Flore species is an important problem, pollution is the biggest issue that we have to tackle for the sake of our mother earth.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views—the loss of species and pollution—and clearly states the writer's own position favoring pollution as the more critical issue. Ideas are generally extended and supported, such as when the student details water, land, and air pollution, mentioning plastic waste and carbon dioxide emissions. However, some arguments lack deeper elaboration, and there are occasional spelling and lexical inaccuracies like 'loosing' instead of 'losing' and 'extint'. Nevertheless, a clear position is maintained throughout, fitting the Band 6.5 to 7.0 criteria well.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay has a clear overall arrangement with a standard four-paragraph structure. Introduction and conclusion are present, and the body paragraphs logically separate the two opposing viewpoints. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'While some people', 'In addition', 'However', and 'Advocates of the other school of thought'. However, referencing and progression can occasionally feel slightly mechanical, and mechanical errors in punctuation or paragraph flow slightly disrupt the natural progression. Overall, the organizational structure meets the requirements for a Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms like 'extinction', 'environmental imbalance', 'toxic fuel', and 'green house effect'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors throughout the essay, including 'loosing' instead of 'losing', 'extint' instead of 'extinct', 'Faune and Flore' (Fauna and Flora), 'irriversible', 'whcih', and 'dyoxyde'. These errors show a lack of precision in word forms and spelling, preventing the response from achieving a higher band, though communication remains clear.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'While some people believe that...', '...plastics that take centuries to break down...'). There are, however, several grammatical and mechanical inaccuracies, such as capitalization errors ('Humans', 'Faune and Flore'), missing articles, and awkward phrasing ('couldn't be the more important issue than'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the score from reaching Band 7.0.
