Student answer (Band 5.0)

Some individuals say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. However, others say that there are more important environmental problems. In this essay, I will discuss both views. I agree with both views.

An environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals because, in a couple of years, our environmental problem have increased due to the breakdown of the ozone layer. For instance, in 2026, recent research around the world has shown that an increase in global warming will impact on human beings, plants, and animals.

On the other hand, people say that there are more important environmental problems, because of climate change and air pollution. In addition, Pakistan experiences climate change in every year, and its effects are seen in the form of floods in 2020 and extreme heatwaves experienced in Pakistan, which impact glaciers in the mountains. For example, Pakistan has in winters experienced a huge smog in Karachi and punjab due to climate change.

In conclusion: I believe that environmental problems affect every living thing in the world because they affect species of plants, animals, and human beings. we change our en

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt by discussing the loss of specific species versus other environmental problems, and it attempts to present an opinion. However, the essay is severely under-length, reaching only 202 words compared to the minimum requirement of 250 words. This results in significant under-development of ideas and a sudden, truncated conclusion that tails off mid-sentence ("we change our en"). Furthermore, the student states "I agree with both views", which is contradictory given that the prompt asks to discuss both views and give an own opinion. Due to the incomplete nature of the response and failure to meet the word count, this meets the criteria for Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay displays some basic organization with paragraph divisions corresponding to the introduction, body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion. However, the overall progression is disrupted by the abrupt ending. Cohesive devices are used, such as "On the other hand" and "In addition", but referencing and logical links are sometimes mechanical or weak. For example, the transition into the discussion about Pakistan is somewhat abrupt, and pronoun referencing in sentences like "they affect species" is slightly unclear. Paragraphing is attempted, but the final paragraph is broken off. These features place the response firmly at Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally repetitive and limited, though minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary such as "breakdown of the ozone layer", "global warming", and "extreme heatwaves", but there are notable lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as "impact on human beings" (instead of simply "impact human beings") and "experiences climate change in every year". Spelling and word choice are mostly clear enough not to impede communication entirely, but the restricted range and inaccuracies prevent the writing from achieving a higher band, aligning well with a Band 5.0 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, using subordinating conjunctions like "because" and "although". However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as "our environmental problem have increased" (subject-verb agreement error), "Pakistan experiences climate change in every year", and "has in winters experienced a huge smog". Punctuation errors are also present, including a missing space after a full stop ("pollution. In addition"). Because the attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty and errors cause some distraction for the reader, a score of 5.0 is appropriate.
