Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the loss of species and other major environmental problems, and presents a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas tends to be somewhat superficial and repetitive. For instance, the discussion on pollution and resource usage relies on broad generalisations rather than well-supported explanations. The example of a university study regarding pollution is vague and lacks specific detail. Similarly, the reference to the 'wern' bird is underdeveloped. To reach a higher band, the student needs to extend arguments with more specific explanations and concrete examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at paragraphing, moving from an introduction to body paragraphs discussing different perspectives, and a conclusion. However, cohesion is frequently faulty and mechanical. The student relies heavily on basic transitional markers like 'Moreover', 'In conclusion', and 'For instance', but referencing is sometimes unclear, such as the pronoun use in 'they are the one who is harming'. Paragraphing could also be managed more effectively, as the second body paragraph awkwardly blends multiple distinct points without smooth transitions, resulting in a somewhat disjointed flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, but lacks the flexibility and precision needed for higher bands. There are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'crisis' used as a singular noun ('environmental crisis'), 'perticular', 'Developement', 'unnacessary', 'extention' instead of 'extinction', 'wern', and 'eridicating'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary items like 'civilisation' and 'concerning', but inaccurate collocations and persistent spelling mistakes somewhat impede communication and demonstrate limitations in lexical control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'there are some other important environmental problem that need to be addressed' and 'loss of animal and plants species are one of biggest concern'. Run-on sentences and punctuation issues are also present, particularly in the conclusion where multiple clauses are joined inadequately with commas. While these errors rarely completely obscure the message, they occur with enough frequency to prevent the essay from achieving a higher band.
