Student answer (Band 5.0)

Environment problems of our time are caused by different thing. It has a big and long lasting impact on the globe and some can't be repaired again.

Some people says that it is caused by the loss of particular species of plants and animals those countributed great in maintaining the better environment and due to there loss Earth is facing many environmental problems. Because of these the food chain or different cycles on Earth are disturbed and it is causing a big impact.

Other population says that there are more problems that are causing damage to our environment. These includes pollution the water, air and land. Deforestation causing more floods it results in washing out the fertile soil. Deforestation also caused in increasing Earth's temperature that disturbs the ozone layer too. Moreover Discharging industrial wastes in to waters that endangers marine life. Toxic fumes from industries and vehicles can pollute the air causing great damage to ecosystem and can cause fatal or uncurable problems to living lifes.

Talking about my opinion I personally think that loss of particular species of plants and animals are not a big deal in environmental problem. The major impact is caused by other issues that Earth is facing and which can be seen though time. Though my perosnal experience i have noticed and felt that from my childhood to the present time the Earth temperature has increased alot from past 10 to 12 years and deforestation is the main causse of this problem. World is trying to change this by planting more trees but the problem is not out of hand.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views—the loss of species and other pressing environmental problems—and provides a personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive, placing it firmly in the Band 5 category. The introduction is very brief, and the student's position in the body and conclusion is slightly contradictory and under-developed, stating at one point that 'loss of particular species... are not a big deal.' While the ideas are relevant, they lack the extension and depth required for higher bands. There is a tendency to over-generalise without sufficient supporting examples, which prevents the response from reaching Band 6 standards.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is organised into distinct paragraphs with an introduction, two body paragraphs representing different viewpoints, and a concluding opinion. However, the progression of ideas is often disjointed due to frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing. Cohesive devices are used sparingly and sometimes inaccurately, such as 'Some people says' and 'Other population says,' which leads to mechanical transitions rather than natural flow. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within paragraphs is weak. Referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the logical development of arguments easily. Overall, the structure shows some organisation, but the lack of smooth progression and accurate cohesive ties places it at Band 5.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, with frequent errors in word choice and form that occasionally impede communication. Examples include 'different thing' instead of 'different things', 'there loss' instead of 'their loss', and 'living lifes' instead of 'lives'. While the student attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'ecosystem', 'industries', and 'discharging', these are often marred by spelling or collocation errors (e.g., 'uncurable problems' instead of 'incurable' or 'fatal problems'). The range is minimally adequate for the task, but noticeable lexical limitations and errors restrict the score to Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences alongside poorly controlled complex attempts. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('Some people says', 'loss of particular species... are'), punctuation mistakes, and incorrect prepositions ('in to waters'). Complex structures are frequently faulty, leading to sentences that require reader interpretation. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a Band 6 score, where a better mix of error-free sentences would be expected.
