Student answer (Band 5.0)

In the recent decades, although many people believe that the loss of biodiversity is the main cause of environmental problem, others argue that there are more several causes which are responsible for environmental damage. This essay will discuss both perspectives before presenting my own opinion.

On the one hand, loss of biodiversity is the crucual reasons of environmental degradation. Plants are the main sources of respiration because of them people can inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide.Furthermore, plants help maintain weather levels properly and because of this rain happens. Moreover, Animals are protect the environment from different types of garbage and litter. For example, the crow eats garbage from the environment and make a liveable environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The student has attempted to address the task by discussing whether the loss of biodiversity is the main environmental problem or if other issues are more critical. However, the response is severely limited by its length. The Length Check confirms that the text contains only 116 words, which falls significantly short of the 250-word minimum requirement. Consequently, the ideas presented in the body paragraph remain severely under-developed, and the second view requested in the prompt, along with the personal conclusion, is entirely missing. Addressing only a fraction of the prompt and failing to meet the minimum word count restricts the task achievement score to Band 4.0. To improve, the student must ensure all parts of the prompt are fully discussed and write at least the minimum word count.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The text demonstrates a basic attempt at organization, featuring an introductory paragraph and a body paragraph. Basic cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the one hand', 'Furthermore', and 'Moreover'. However, overall progression is lacking because the essay is cut off abruptly after the first body paragraph, meaning there is no balancing view or conclusion. Paragraphing is initiated properly, but the incomplete nature of the essay prevents a coherent overall arrangement. Referencing is occasionally awkward, such as 'because of them people can inhale oxygen'. These issues place the text firmly within Band 5.0, where some basic organisation is present but overall progression and adequate cohesive structure are compromised.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student demonstrates a limited but minimally adequate vocabulary for discussing environmental topics, using words such as 'biodiversity', 'degradation', 'respiration', and 'garbage'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation errors throughout the text, such as 'crucual reasons' instead of 'crucial reason', 'weather levels properly' instead of 'weather patterns' or 'climatic conditions', and 'make a liveable environment' instead of 'help create a liveable environment'. Additionally, spelling errors like 'crucual' detract from the quality. Because the vocabulary range is narrow and features noticeable errors that require the reader to interpret the intended meaning, the lexical resource score is Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the concessive clause in the opening sentence: 'In the recent decades, although many people believe that...'. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors that cause difficulty for the reader. Examples include preposition and article misuse ('In the recent decades' instead of 'In recent decades', 'are protect the environment' instead of 'protect the environment') and awkward clause linking ('because of this rain happens'). Punctuation and subject-verb agreement errors are also present. Due to the limited range of reliable structures and frequent grammatical errors, this performance aligns with Band 5.0.
