Student answer (Band 5.0)

There is serious debate about a big enviromental issue. Some people believe that loss of some speices is a big problem while others believe that there are some important problems like climate change is a big threat for our enviroment that we have to talk about.

On the one hand, loosing animals and species can create problem for our whole ecosystem. These species are very helpful for our life. For example if bees disapear, the prodution system is going to destroy. Some plants are very useful for humans and animals life. We are going to face food shortage. Some species are dependent on some kind of plants . While, some animals are going to extint.

On the other hand, some people argue that their are some big problems that is not good our life like global warming and pollution. Climate change play a big role for weather that can cause floods. The enviromental pollution is also a big threat for our life it can demage the water in agricultural land. The water is play a big role. We cannot live without water and because of air pollution humans and animals can get sick and some species will going to exteint from this world.

In conclusion, both problems are very bad for humans and animals life. People have to think about both issue and solve it.

In my opinion, enviroment problems are main threat for our life we should have to discuss this problem for our next generation because some animals we they are not going to see in future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views—the loss of specific species versus other major environmental threats like climate change and pollution—and presents a personal opinion in the conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the discussion on bees and plants is brief and lacks fully extended supporting details. The conclusion introduces a new idea regarding future generations that could have been integrated earlier. The writer maintains a clear position throughout, but the reasoning remains basic, aligning closely with the Band 5 descriptor where ideas are present but under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, showing a basic attempt at logical progression through the use of standard transition markers such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion'. However, overall cohesion feels mechanical and sometimes faulty. For example, referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in the sentence 'The water is play a big role', where the connection to the previous sentence is abrupt. Paragraphing is utilised, but internal cohesion within the body paragraphs lacks smooth transitions, leading to choppy sentences. These characteristics fit the Band 5 descriptors well, reflecting some organisation but lacking clear overall progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, with several spelling errors ('enviromental', 'speices', 'disapear', 'prodution', 'extint', 'demage', 'exteint'). The writer attempts some less common terms like 'ecosystem', 'food shortage', and 'global warming', but word choice and spelling inaccuracies are noticeable and occasionally cause strain for the reader. The repetition of basic phrases like 'big problem' and 'big threat' further restricts the lexical range. Because the vocabulary is minimally adequate for the task but contains frequent noticeable errors, a score of 5.0 is appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but grammatical accuracy is weak. Frequent errors include subject-verb agreement issues ('Climate change play', 'The water is play'), incorrect verb forms ('will going to exteint'), and missing articles. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma splices and run-on sentences in the conclusion and introduction. While the meaning can generally be deciphered, the high frequency of basic structural errors means the grammar sits comfortably at Band 5, where frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader.
