IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Earth is a home for all creatures present on this planet just like humans and some of them considers that endangered species of plants and animals are the major issue of our environment however, others believe that there could be other problem which we can consider as a serious issue and I believe the same.

Harming an environment and imbalancing the nature is also a sign of environmental problem. Emission of carbon dyoxide is one of the major issues nowadays, as humans do not have a proper solution to address this problem. In addition, excessive amount of carbon dyoxide and carbon monoxide in our atmosphere is directly causing a harm to ozone layer of the earth, which is responbile to protect the earth against ultra-violate rays. To exemplify, ozone layer is degrading by 4% on an annual basis because of harsh environmental condition.

To continue with that, some chemical compositions are also equally guilty to cause a serious problem to an environment as they are non-biodegradable, it will remain as it is upto thousands of years. Moreover, it will conteminate to soil and reduces its quality, which will further create a problem for plants and crops to grow.

On the other hand, somehow human activites are also affecting the habitat of animal species and suitable surrounding for plants, due to which they are getting extinct. Various projects are being introduced by government In order to slow the extinction process of endangered species of animals and plants. For an instance, restoration of 5 completely extencited species is done successfully in a year 2024, with the help of strict initiatives took by government.

All in all, extinction of animals and plants could be a sign of environmental problem however, it is inevitable fact that there are other major problems to solve which needs attention and vital to solve.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—the loss of species as the main environmental problem and the existence of other more important problems—while providing a clear personal opinion. In the first paragraph, the writer states, 'others believe that there could be other problem which we can consider as a serious issue and I believe the same.' The ideas are relevant and supported with explanations regarding carbon emissions, ozone layer depletion, and chemical pollution, as well as counter-arguments mentioning government conservation projects. However, some arguments are slightly under-developed or general, such as the claim about restoring extinct species. While the main task requirements are adequately met, the development of ideas prevents it from reaching a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear stance presented in the introduction and summarized in the conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different main ideas, such as carbon emissions, chemical pollution, and animal extinction. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty. The writer uses phrases like 'To continue with that' and 'To exemplify,' which feel slightly unnatural or awkward in academic writing. Furthermore, referencing and logical transitions between some sentences could be smoother, as seen in the transition from chemical pollution back to human activities in paragraph four. Overall, the organizational structure is functional but lacks flexible, sophisticated cohesive devices.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'non-biodegradable,' 'endangered species,' and 'extinction process.' However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that detract from the overall quality, including 'dyoxide' instead of dioxide, 'responbile' instead of responsible, 'conteminate' instead of contaminate, and 'extencited' instead of extinct. Collocations are occasionally awkward, such as 'harming an environment and imbalancing the nature' and 'harsh environmental condition.' Although these vocabulary errors do not completely impede communication, they restrict the lexical score to a Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to use relative clauses and conditional structures. For instance, the writer uses sentences like 'Emission of carbon dyoxide is one of the major issues nowadays, as humans do not have a proper solution to address this problem.' However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the text, such as missing articles ('harm to ozone layer', 'reduces its quality'), incorrect prepositions ('guilty to cause'), and pluralization errors ('other problem'). Additionally, run-on sentences appear, particularly in the opening sentence. These errors indicate limited control over complex structures, placing the grammar score firmly at Band 5.5.
