IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In recent years, there has been several debates revolving around the urgency of climate issues. Some people believe that most important of all issues is decreased number of specifc plants and animals, while others agrue that other environmental problems such as air pollution, water pollution, deforestation, and climate changes should be given more attention.
The are several assumptions that loss of diveristy in flora and fuana is one of the prominent environmental problems. Industrialization and modernization led to deforestation in order to acquire more land for housing and building residential areas. As a result many plant and animal species lost their natural habitat resulting in graudal decrease in their number. When plants and animals go extinct, it dirsupts food chains and the whole ecosystem. For instance, in Pakistan, sparrows used to be a commonly found bird and now its has almost disappeared. It doesn't only signal they couldnt survive harsher conditions but also warns about the detrimental effect of climate change on living beings.Additionally, since trees have been cut down, the carbon dioxcide released in atmosphere by industries and transport vehicles is directly absorbed by ozone layer.
On the other hand, some people argue that there are more signficant ecological issues than loss of plants and animals. The increasing number of industries results in increase of greenhouse gases. The overgowing population is another challenge to overcome, as cities are crowded and natrual resources to sustain it are depleting. The industrial waste is pumped into rivers and the same water is consumed by locals that results in health issues. The notable change in climate is less frequent rainfall and more common natural disasters. In recent years, Sindh suffered from drought, Punjab faced earthquakes and KPK was challenged by floods. All together resulted in loss of property and human life.
I strongly advocate for the view that loss of plant and animal species is major environmental problem as it is not a single phenomenon. It stems from deforestation, harsh climate conditions, depleting food resources and signals what catastrophic events are we about to encounter.
In conclusion, I believe that loss of plants and animals symbolize that our planet Earth is on fire. It is not different from environmental issues but is one of the results. Therefore, it should not be overlooked as solving other problems might create better living conditions for various plants and animals.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—the loss of species versus other environmental problems—and presents a clear position throughout. Ideas are generally relevant, but some are under-developed or lack full explanation. For instance, the discussion on how carbon dioxide is absorbed by the ozone layer contains a scientific inaccuracy and is underdeveloped. Furthermore, the final paragraph reiterates the student's stance rather than offering deeper extension of the arguments. To reach a higher level, all supporting arguments would need more thorough elaboration with more precise examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving from an introduction to arguments for species loss, counter-arguments regarding other ecological issues, and a personal conclusion. Cohesive devices are used adequately to connect ideas, such as 'On the other hand' and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and cohesion can sometimes feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. To move towards the highest bands, referencing could be smoother and paragraph transitions could be integrated with greater subtlety and fluidity.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'biodiversity', 'catastrophic', and 'detrimental'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that occur throughout the response, such as 'specifc', 'agrue', 'diveristy', 'fuana', 'dirsupts', 'dioxcide', 'overgowing', and 'natrual'. While these errors do not seriously impede communication, they restrict the lexical score. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to demonstrate greater precision in word choice and eliminate spelling inaccuracies in less common vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over structure. However, there are a number of grammatical errors and issues with articles, prepositions, and subject-verb agreement, such as 'there has been several debates', 'most important of all issues is decreased number', and 'its has almost disappeared'. These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, but they recur often enough to prevent a higher rating. To improve, the student should focus on ensuring better accuracy in article usage and subject-verb agreement within complex sentences.
