Student answer (Band 6.0)

People have different opinions about rising environmental problems. Many individuals believe that the main environmental problem is the loss of the particular species. One counterarugument is that there are more crucial problems which causes harm to the biodiversity. This assay will discuss both the viewpoint before presenting my own opinion.

On the one hand, some species of plants and animals have been lost which have major impact on the biodiversity. If specific species get extinct from the environment then entire food chain will get disturbed. There is a possibility that the species which depends on that plant or animal, that will be also extinct from the biodiversity. For instance, the disapperance of sparrows, which are the predators of the pests. It has resulted into overpopulation of insects and pests. It has negative affect on the cultivation of the crops. As a result, agricultural economy suffers from the loss of the significant species.

On the other hand, there are more critical problems available other than loss of the specific species. One of the primary factor is usage of the fossil fuel. People are using fuel which emitts the toxic gases in the air like carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. This polluted air get inhaled by both the animals and the humans which decreases the average life-span of the individuals. It also causes the serious respiratory problems and rise in the temperature of the environment. Additionaly, due to alteration in the temperature and accumulation of the waste on seaside has resulted in disturbance of the marine ecosystem,.

In conclusion, although loss of the specific species of plats and animals have serious threat to the environment. I believe that other causes pose a more significant danger to the humans and animlas well-being and affects the entire ecosystem.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on environmental problems and providing a clear personal opinion in the conclusion. However, some parts are more fully developed than others. The first body paragraph adequately explores the loss of species using the example of sparrows and pests, but the second body paragraph bundles multiple broader issues like fossil fuels, air pollution, and marine ecosystems together without fully expanding on any single one in depth. The position is clear throughout, but the ideas sometimes lean towards generalisation due to this uneven development.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and referencing is not always clear, such as in sentences like 'the species which depends on that plant or animal, that will be also extinct'. Cohesive devices and transition phrases like 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are present, but the flow between individual sentences within paragraphs occasionally feels slightly disjointed.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'biodiversity', 'overpopulation', 'respiratory problems', and 'marine ecosystem'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and word-formation errors throughout the text, including 'counterarugument' (spelling), 'assay' instead of essay, 'disapperance', 'emitts', and 'affect' instead of effect. Furthermore, collocation and phrasing are sometimes unnatural, such as 'critical problems available other than', which reflects the limitations of this band level where errors do not severely impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses. There are some errors in grammar, punctuation, and article usage, such as 'rising environmental problems' instead of worsening or increasing ones, 'loss of the particular species', and fragment sentences like 'Additionaly, due to alteration in the temperature and accumulation of the waste on seaside has resulted in disturbance of the marine ecosystem'. Despite these recurrent errors in prepositions, plurals, and subject-verb agreement, the meaning remains generally clear and the errors rarely impede communication.
