Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Exctinction of flaura and fauna is believed to be the fundamental issue of this era. Although some believe that this is the main problem because it affects largely in food chain systems but other people say that there are other crucial environmental hazards such as global warming as it has negative effect for the surrounding. I firlmly agree to the latter statement because of climate change and its impact on the enironment.

Loss of plants and animals largely affect the fod web and the continuation of consumer pyramid. The decrease in number of particular primary consumers rises the number of secondary consumers. Thus, It creates imbalance in a food chain and one consumers predominantly rule over the other. This disbalance directly affect the environment as vital vegetation helps to absorb the harmful gases while wild life helps to secure the balance within the animal teritory. For example, the increase in number of Kangaroo in Australia has affected the local residents due to the abundant rise in their number while its primary consumer tiger or other some wild life has exctint in a large number.

The other main driver to the enironmental problem is the global warming due to the green house effect in the surrounding. The rise in industrialization and the urbanization plays a vital role in affecting the surrounding environment with escalating pollution. With the increase in industry and factories, there is also a rapid rise in harmful gases and fumes which dirrectly affect to the atmoshphere. I highly agree to this because of the rise in climate change in recent times. The glacier has melted unproportonately in the himalays due to the rise in global temperature. Therefore, there has been seen an unusual pattern in the weather and rainfall unanimously. For instance, UAE recorded the highest precipitation of rainfall in its major cities due to the rise in environmental problems related to unforseen change in waether patterns.

In conclusion, while loss of species of plants and animals life create a imbalance in a food pyramid as a main environmental problem. Other factors like global warming and change in climate has the major role to degrade the environment in modern era due to the fact that it pollutes the surroundings.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the loss of species and other environmental issues like global warming, and states a clear personal position. However, some parts are developed more fully than others. The discussion surrounding biodiversity loss introduces some confusing points, such as the example of tigers being the primary consumer of kangaroos and going extinct, which shows under-developed or inaccurate support. Conversely, the argument regarding global warming and industrialisation is presented more clearly. To reach a higher level, all supporting arguments would need to be well-developed and grounded in accurate, logical reasoning without confusing ecological relationships.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, maintaining a logical progression throughout. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different ideas, such as biodiversity in the second paragraph and global warming in the third. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty. For instance, transitional phrases and referencing are occasionally awkward, such as 'other people say that...' abruptly following the first viewpoint, and the pronoun referencing in sentences like 'Thus, It creates imbalance' lacks smooth integration. To improve, the writer needs to employ cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure smoother transitions between sentences and paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'fundamental issue', 'consumer pyramid', and 'unproportonately'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'Exctinction', 'flaura', 'firlmly', 'enironment', 'fod', 'exctint', 'eniromental', 'green house', 'dirrectly', 'atmoshphere', 'himalays', and 'unanimously'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they highlight an inconsistency in lexical accuracy and spelling control. To achieve a higher band, the vocabulary needs to be used with greater precision and fewer mechanical slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at complex structures such as conditional and relative clauses. There are, however, some errors in grammar, punctuation, and article usage that occur across the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues like 'loss of plants and animals largely affect', missing articles such as 'in food chain systems', and awkward prepositional usage or punctuation errors like 'Thus, It creates imbalance'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they persist enough to prevent the writing from achieving a higher level of grammatical control. A greater proportion of error-free complex sentences is needed to progress.
