Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the prompt minimally, touching upon the loss of species and alternative environmental concerns, but the development of ideas is heavily constrained. Furthermore, the length requirement is not met, as the response falls short of the 250-word minimum. The position is somewhat discernible in the conclusion, but the reasoning throughout the body paragraphs remains limited and repetitive. To reach a higher level, the writer would need to fully extend and support their ideas with relevant examples rather than relying on generalized statements, while also ensuring the essay meets the required word count.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays some basic organization, utilizing paragraph breaks to separate the introduction, two body paragraphs, a brief personal perspective, and a conclusion. However, there is no clear overall progression of ideas, and the transition between thoughts is often abrupt. Cohesive devices are used minimally and sometimes inaccurately, such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand', which do not frame well-developed opposing arguments effectively. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal logical progression within the paragraphs needs significant improvement to guide the reader smoothly through the argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with frequent issues in word choice, spelling, and word formation that strain the reader's comprehension. Examples of lexical strain include 'enviormental', 'decleared', 'preciouse', 'diet' instead of 'dead', 'effact', and 'purshing' instead of 'poaching'. The writer attempts some topic-specific vocabulary related to the environment, but spelling errors like 'claimat' and 'envoirment' recur throughout the text. To improve, the student must build a wider and more accurate vocabulary range and pay close attention to standard spelling and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The writing demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex structures that are heavily flawed. There are constant errors in verb forms, subject-verb agreement, and articles, such as 'the enviornment loss theri refreshment' and 'the government should be planed a sceme'. Punctuation is also erratic, with missing spaces after periods and incomplete sentence boundaries. These frequent grammatical errors cause significant difficulty for the reader and obscure the intended meaning of many sentences.
