IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people opine that the loss of biodiversity is the most important environmental problem of the current times while others postulate there are number of other problems. I agree with the latter view as species extinction is not a new concept, and humanity has thrived despite that outcome;however, pollution and global warming are critical problems that directly affects our life and death.

Loss of exotic plants and animals is certainly bad. In order to study the history and evolution, the value of historic species as a subject is immense. This means that animals like dinosaurs can give valuable information relating the transfer of life from sea to land since they are one of the first few who lived in both water and land. If animals and plants were alive they would contribute more valuable data in scientic evolution than the fossils.

On the other side of the argument, species extinction is niether a new concept nor a threat. Even in jurassic era there are some animals who were extinct long before the emergence of dinosours. It is global warming and increasing pollution levels where our focus should be. Global warming will make the planet too hot to sustain life whereas rising pollution levels would result in higher chance of getting a disease or a disorder.

In my view, both global warming and pollution levels can be controlled by stricter governmental regulations. As a result the side-effects, like coughing, pneumonia and sun burn, can be reduced to a significant level. Moreover, after solving these problems, deforestation should also be controlled. How will we be able to breathe if we cut down trees? Thus, in my opinion there are a number of problems to take care of before the area of endangered species can be looked on.

To conclude, the loss of fauna nd flora is not as critical to nature as human made problems such as pollution, deforestation and depleting ozone layer which results in global warming.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state a clear preference for the view that other environmental problems are more important. The discussion identifies species loss and then focuses on global warming and pollution, with deforestation added in your conclusion. However, some ideas are less fully developed than others: the dinosaur example mainly concerns the scientific value of extinct species, rather than explaining the present-day consequences of losing species, and the claim that extinction is “not a threat” is asserted rather than supported. Your own position is clear, but the argument would be stronger if you explained more precisely how pollution and climate change affect people and ecosystems, and acknowledged why current species loss may differ from past extinctions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction presents your position, the next paragraphs consider each side, and a conclusion restates your view. Linking phrases such as “On the other side of the argument,” “In my view,” and “To conclude” help readers follow the structure. This meets the lower-band expectation of clear overall organisation and shows some effective progression. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical, and the relationship between points is not always clear. For example, the paragraph about the scientific value of dinosaurs does not connect explicitly to the current loss of species, while the final paragraph introduces the ozone layer without developing it earlier. Use clearer references and transitions to show how each example supports your central comparison.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “loss of biodiversity,” “species extinction,” “global warming,” “pollution levels,” and “governmental regulations.” There are also attempts at less common or formal wording, such as “postulate” and “side-effects,” though some choices are inaccurate or unnatural in context. For instance, “the transfer of life from sea to land” is unclear, and “scientic,” “niether,” “dinosours,” and “fauna nd flora” contain spelling errors. “Current times” and “looked on” are also less natural choices here. These issues do not prevent understanding, but more precise collocations and careful proofreading would make the vocabulary more controlled and appropriate for an academic argument.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including a concession with “while,” a conditional question (“How will we be able to breathe if we cut down trees?”), and a relative clause beginning “which.” Most sentences communicate their meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. In “there are number of other problems,” an article is needed; “problems that directly affects” has a subject–verb agreement error; and “higher chance” needs an article or plural form. The semicolon before “however” is also punctuated incorrectly, and the final sentence has an unclear singular/plural relationship in “problems … which results.” Review agreement, articles, and punctuation, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
