IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Now a days, some people argue that the major environmental issue is the loss specific species of plants and animals, while other believe that there more important and pressing environmental challenges. In this essay, both perspectives will be examined before my own position on this matter is established.

On the one hand, the extinction of particular species of some plants and animals is considered by many to be a critical concern. Biodiversity plays a key role in balancing natural ecosystem. The disappearance of even one species can distrupt food chain, affect human agriculture and the overall invironment. For example, the decline in bee population due to harmful pesticides has severe affect on pollination and crop production. Additionally, the loss of rare plants and animals often results from human activities like deforestation and illegal hunting, which highlights our destructive impact on nature.

On the other hand, others argue that broader environmental issues such as climate change, water and air pollution, and global warming are more urgent. These problems affect not only wildlife but also human survival and global stability. For instance, the rise in temprature and sea levels threatens enitire communities and create extreme weather conditions. Moreover, polluted air and water lead to serious health problems and reduce the quality of life of millions of people worldwide.

In conclusion, although the loss of certain species is a significant environmental problem, I beleive climate change, pollution and global warming are more critical due to their global effect on all forms of life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses both views and gives a clear opinion: species loss is important, but climate change and pollution are more critical because of their effects on life globally. The two body paragraphs provide relevant support, including the role of bees in pollination and the threat of rising temperatures and sea levels to communities. This gives the discussion a clear line of argument. However, some points are asserted more than fully explained. For example, the claim that losing one species can affect agriculture and the environment would be stronger with a clearer explanation of how this happens. The discussion of broader problems also groups several issues together without distinguishing their effects. Develop one or two examples in greater depth to make the reasoning more convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The essay is organised effectively, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two perspectives, and a conclusion that restates your position. The progression from species loss to wider environmental threats is easy to follow, and signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” makes the structure clear. Linking within paragraphs is also generally logical, as “Additionally” introduces a related cause of species loss and “Moreover” adds another consequence of pollution. To make cohesion more flexible, rely less on formulaic transitions and connect some ideas through clearer referencing or cause-and-effect links. For instance, explain more explicitly how deforestation and hunting contribute to the biodiversity effects described earlier.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “biodiversity,” “deforestation,” “illegal hunting,” “pollination,” and “global stability.” These choices help communicate the environmental discussion, and the meaning remains clear despite some inaccuracies. However, spelling errors such as “distrupt,” “invironment,” “temprature,” and “beleive” reduce accuracy. There are also awkward or imprecise combinations, including “loss specific species,” “balancing natural ecosystem,” and “severe affect on pollination.” Aim to learn environmental collocations as complete phrases and check spelling carefully. More precise wording would also help distinguish related issues rather than repeating broad terms such as “environmental problems” and “critical.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response includes a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause in the introduction and a relative clause in “which highlights our destructive impact on nature.” Most sentences communicate their main meaning, and the paragraph structure supports readability. Some grammatical errors remain, however. Examples include “other believe” and “there more important,” where subject–verb agreement and the verb “are” are needed; “can distrupt food chain,” which needs an article or plural form; and “the rise in temprature and sea levels … create,” where the subject and verb do not agree. The sentence about rising temperatures also shifts awkwardly between singular and plural ideas. Review agreement, articles, and sentence construction, while continuing to use varied clauses.
