IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some individuals believe that the major environment issue is the extinction of specific species of flora and fauna in recent time. While others argue that there are more impending environmental issue to address. In my opinion, some species are very essential for maintaining ecosystem on the earth, so protecting them must be our first piorirty.
On the one hand, some people say that protecting the species that are on the verge of extinction should be our primary objective in the protection of the environment. The main reason of this statement is an important role of particular species that maintain balance in the ecological system of the earth. For instance, Plankton is a major supplier of oxygen in the earth's water bodies that is facing threat of extinction by the exposure of UV sunrays. As a result, aquatic ecosystem is facing danger of destruction due to dependency on this plant. Therefore, I agree that saving these particular species are most important task of the recent time.
On the other hand, others put more importance on other environmental issue such as pollution and gobal warming. The global warming is root cause of major disaster all over the globe in recent years. The industries releasing harmful greenhouse gases in earth's atmosphere have lead to rising temprature which melts glaciers and causing rising sea level. For example, Nepal faced dangerous floods due to melting of glacies of the himalayas in present time. Consequentely, many people loss their lives in the dangerous flow of water. However, i believe that all this issue is closely related to protection of specific species due to these being threat to their existence, so we can address this issues in the dicussion about protection of the species.
In conclusion, I would like to say that protection of these important species is a most crucial step for saving environment, whereas other problem are closely related to survival of these species. Hence, addressing these problems are possible with saving the species.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both perspectives and state a clear opinion: protecting threatened species should be the priority. The first body paragraph gives a relevant ecological reason and an example involving plankton, while the second discusses pollution, greenhouse gases, warming and flooding. This covers the task, but the two views are not developed equally: the argument for prioritising species is explained more fully, whereas the case that other environmental problems may be more important is mainly described rather than explored. The Nepal example illustrates consequences of warming, but the link between this and the competing view could be made clearer. Your conclusion repeats your position, though the claim that other problems can be addressed through species protection needs stronger justification. Develop the opposing argument and explain more precisely how the examples support your judgement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” make the progression easy to follow, and the examples generally appear beside the relevant claims. This meets the lower-band expectations securely and shows some features of stronger organisation. However, connections are occasionally mechanical or unclear. In particular, “However, I believe that all this issue is closely related…” does not clearly explain how the discussion of warming and floods supports prioritising species, and “these problems” has an uncertain reference. Use transitions to express the actual relationship between ideas, and make each paragraph’s central claim and supporting explanation connect more explicitly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “extinction,” “ecological system,” “greenhouse gases,” “glaciers,” and “sea level,” so the subject is generally clear. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “on the verge of extinction.” However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “piorirty,” “gobal warming,” “temprature,” “glacies,” and “Consequentely” are examples. Some combinations are also unnatural, including “major environment issue,” “supplier of oxygen,” and “dangerous flow of water.” These do not usually prevent understanding, but they make the writing less controlled. Check spelling carefully and learn common environmental collocations, choosing precise terms rather than translating phrases directly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “The industries releasing harmful greenhouse gases…” and a result clause beginning “As a result.” The overall meaning is usually understandable, but errors in agreement, articles, verb forms and sentence construction occur across the response. For example, “saving these particular species are” should use a singular verb with the gerund subject, and “have lead to rising temprature which melts glaciers and causing rising sea level” mixes verb forms and has unclear agreement. The opening “While others argue…” is a fragment rather than a complete sentence. Review subject–verb agreement, articles and parallel verb forms, and check that subordinate clauses are attached to complete sentences. More accurate control of these structures would make your varied sentences easier to follow.
