IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Environmental protection has become one of the most critical issues facing the world today. While some people argue that extinction of specific plants and animals species is the primary environmental concern, others believe that issues like climate changes and pollution are far more important. In my opinion, global warming and pollution represent greater threats because they endanger all living things, including humans.

On the one hand, supporters of biodiversity argues that losing species damages entire ecosystems. Every plant and animal plays a crucial role in maintaining and balancing the nature. When a particular species dies out, it can cause a food chain to collapse that affects other plants and animals in the same habitat. For example, the rapid decline of bees around the world threatens crop pollination, which can directly reduce global food production. Furthermore, many rare plants are essential for medical research and discovering new medicines for human diseases.

On the other hand, many people claim that global environmental problems are more urgent than the loss of individual species. Issues like climate changes, rising sea levels and plastic pollution affect the entire planet rather than specific habitats. For example, severe air pollution in major industrial cities causes health problems for million of residents every day, while rising ocean temperature threatens whole marine ecosystems simultaneously. If we do not address global warming and pollution, no habitat will remain safe for plants, animals or humans to survive in.

In conclusion, although the extinction of particular plants and the animals is a serious problem for biodiversity. I believe that broader issues like climate change and pollution are more crucial. Solving these global challenges will ultimately protect both wildlife habitats and human society as a whole.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You address both views and state a clear position: broader problems such as climate change and pollution pose greater threats because they affect all living things. Each side is supported with relevant examples, including bees’ role in pollination and the health effects of air pollution. The discussion is extended with consequences, such as food-chain disruption and risks to marine ecosystems, so the response does more than list concerns. To develop the argument further, explain more precisely why global problems should take priority when species loss can itself be driven by climate change and pollution. Some claims, such as “no habitat will remain safe,” are broad; qualifying them or adding a specific example would make the reasoning more nuanced.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The essay has a clear, effective structure: the introduction presents the debate and your view, the two body paragraphs discuss opposing positions, and the conclusion restates your judgement. Progression within paragraphs is generally logical, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. Linking also works through cause and consequence, for example, species loss “can cause a food chain to collapse.” To make cohesion more flexible, reduce reliance on formulaic paragraph openers and connect some ideas more directly. The conclusion’s opening sentence is also punctuated as a complete sentence even though it is a dependent contrast clause, which briefly interrupts the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

You use a sufficient range of topic vocabulary with some precision, including “biodiversity,” “ecosystems,” “crop pollination,” “rising sea levels,” and “marine ecosystems.” These choices help explain both the ecological and human consequences of environmental damage. There is also some effective variation in phrasing, such as “primary environmental concern” and “broader issues.” However, occasional word-choice and collocation errors reduce naturalness: “climate changes” is less idiomatic than “climate change,” and “balancing the nature” is awkward. “Million of residents” also has an incorrect plural form. Aim for consistently natural collocations and more precise wording, particularly when describing the scale or causes of environmental impacts.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You demonstrate a useful range of sentence forms, including complex clauses with “While,” “When,” and “If,” as well as relative clauses such as “which can directly reduce global food production.” Many sentences are clear and grammatically controlled. A few errors remain: “supporters of biodiversity argues” has subject–verb disagreement, and “Every plant and animal plays a crucial role in maintaining and balancing the nature” contains an article problem. In the conclusion, “although the extinction … is a serious problem” is left as a dependent clause rather than joined to a main clause, creating a sentence fragment. Review agreement, article use, and punctuation around subordinate clauses; correcting these recurring slips would make the otherwise varied structures more consistently accurate.
