IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

A group of people believes that the major environmental problem at recent scenario is loosing particular species of plants and animals. On the contrary, another group believes that there are more enviornmental problem. I tend to agree with the second group which believes that there more environmental problem.

Our ecosystem is made up in a way that existing of certain plants and animals makes deeper impact in our environment. Certain birds, insects or animal were helping our environment by feeding themselves and excreating which resulted in preservation of plants and food being available in our surrounding. That's why it seems logical that extinction of those species will be major environmental problem.

However, environmental problem is not only concerned with plants and animals. Other things in environment are also connected with our lives. Air, water, mountains, hills, forests etc. are also part of our life. Due to the pollution we have created , we are now experiencing climate change. Our atmosphere is getting hotter. Eventually, the hot atmosphere result in risking life of endangered species due to unadaptive environment for them.

I would like to bring in light about the recent scenario about what happen in China. Due to climate change, there was an avalanche in China which affected Nepal with disastrous flood killing thousands of people and millions of them became homeless. Hence, when we think about environmental problem, it is not just about extinction of plants and animal. There are lot more other problems.

To conclude, existence of certain plants and animal are diminishing day by day which is also an environmental problem. However, there are lot more other issues to be resolved when it comes to environment problem.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You discuss both views and state your position clearly in the introduction: you agree that environmental problems extend beyond species loss. The response also gives relevant reasons, including the role of species in ecosystems and the effects of pollution and climate change. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the case for species loss is explained briefly, while the discussion of wider problems remains general. The China example is intended as support, but the connection between climate change, an avalanche, and the reported effects is not clearly explained, which weakens its relevance. To strengthen the response, develop each view with a specific, well-explained example and make your comparison of their relative importance more explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, a paragraph giving an example, and a conclusion. Transitions such as “On the contrary,” “However,” and “To conclude” help signal the direction of the argument. The progression is generally understandable, but some links between ideas are abrupt. For example, the move from pollution and hotter temperatures to the China example does not explain the causal connection, and “Hence” introduces a conclusion that is broader than the evidence provided. There is also repetition of the idea that environmental problems go beyond extinction. Use clearer referencing and explain how each example supports the point before moving to the next claim.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant environmental vocabulary, including “ecosystem,” “extinction,” “pollution,” “climate change,” and “endangered species,” which allows you to address the topic. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “preservation of plants.” However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or awkward, sometimes making the intended meaning less clear: “at recent scenario,” “excreating,” and “bring in light” are examples. Spelling errors such as “loosing” and “enviornmental” also reduce accuracy. Build a reliable set of topic collocations and check spelling and word forms; precise, natural phrasing will make your ideas easier to follow.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a relative clause in “which resulted in preservation of plants” and a conditional structure beginning “when we think about environmental problem.” This shows some range, but control is inconsistent. Errors in agreement and verb forms appear in “Certain birds, insects or animal were helping” and “the hot atmosphere result,” while “there more environmental problem” is missing a verb. Articles and plural forms are also sometimes inaccurate, as in “a major environmental problem” and “plants and animal.” These errors can make parts of the argument difficult to process. Practise checking each sentence for a clear subject and verb, then review agreement, articles, and singular/plural forms.
