IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Loss of particular species of animals and plants deserve its own attention but other environmental problems are of great importance. I disagree because environmental problems such as global warming, volcanic eruptions and many more not only affect us but plants and animals to. So, focusing on other environmental issues would be a wiser choice.

People who believe that lossing certain species of animals and plants is afftecting our environment more than global warming or melting of glaciers are simply not aware of these issues. They are more inclined towards saving certain species of plants and animals which is right to some extent but putting them above these issue is not the correct call. Saving these animals and plants would be in vain if we cant solve the rising issue of global warming and others as the environmet would become inhabbitable if we dont take the right course of action to solve there problems.

Others who prioritise different environmetal issues including global warming, melting of glaciers, volcanic eruption and many more simply have a better understading that saving the environment of these issues is of grave importance. I believe that if we prioritise the saving of plants and animals then we would be wellcoming different environmental problems that could directly afftect us. Problems that could afftect societies should be given priority as they are directly afftecting the human life.

In conclusion the saving of certain species of animal or plants is important but it can not be put above on other enironmental issue that could directly harm us in any way.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You present a clear preference for addressing broader environmental problems, and you acknowledge that protecting species is important. The response also attempts to discuss both views, particularly by contrasting species conservation with global warming and glacier melt. However, the discussion of the first view is limited: it mainly describes its supporters as unaware of other issues rather than explaining why species loss itself is a serious environmental problem. Your own position is also asserted more than demonstrated, and the claim that problems affecting human societies should take priority needs supporting reasons or a relevant example. Develop both sides more evenly and explain how biodiversity loss and wider environmental threats may be connected.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. The paragraphs broadly separate the opposing views, and linking expressions such as “Others who prioritise” and “In conclusion” help signal the direction of the argument. However, progression within the paragraphs is sometimes repetitive: the idea that broader problems affect people is repeated without being extended with evidence or explanation. References such as “these issues” and “these problems” are not always precise, so the reader may need to infer which environmental threats you mean. Use clearer topic sentences, connect each claim to a specific explanation or example, and make the relationship between species loss and other environmental problems explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “global warming,” “melting of glaciers,” “species,” and “environmental issues,” so the main subject is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “of grave importance” and “prioritise.” However, the range is limited by repeated use of “problems,” “issues,” “affect,” and “saving,” and some combinations are unnatural or imprecise, such as “saving the environment of these issues” and “welcoming different environmental problems.” Spelling errors—including “lossing,” “afftecting,” and “enironmental”—are noticeable and reduce accuracy. Build a more varied set of precise environmental terms and check spelling and collocations carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional construction (“if we prioritise… then we would…”) and a subordinate clause beginning “if we can’t solve…”. These attempts show some range, but control is uneven. Agreement is incorrect in “Loss … deserve” and “Problems … should be given priority as they are directly affecting the human life”; the latter also has an awkward article and number pattern. The sentence beginning “Saving these animals and plants would be in vain” becomes difficult to follow because several clauses are joined together. There are also missing apostrophes in “cant” and “dont,” and punctuation around introductory phrases needs attention. Aim for shorter, accurately controlled sentences before adding more complex clauses.
