IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Some people argue that the major environmental concern at the moment is the extinction of specific plants and animals species while other believe that there are more crucial ploblems which require immediate human attentation. In my opinion, climate change and air pollution are far more important problems and they should be given prority to be solved first.
On the one hand, plants and wild animals make our planet and surroundings more pleasant. They play a vital role in the beautification of atmoshpere and a better living place. Besides that they also have several advantages to humans, for example, plants make agricultural land more fertile and stops errosion of the land. Animals on the other hand, provide food to people and a range earning opportunities by raising livestock at farms. Therefore, their loss will lead to several problems and people will face food security issues as well as challenges including higher temperatures.
However, i argue that the release of harmful gases into atmosphere and rapidly changing weather patterns are more crucial problems. The emissions of carbon dioxide from factories and domestic usage of electronic appliances damage the ozone layer. As a result, dangerous UV rays are causing human health problems as a direct contact on people. Similarly, global warming is also a direct threat to human existance. Many countries are facing extreme drought and increase in overall temperature, leading to destruction of crops. Therefore, the world is unable to produce enough food to meet the human requirements, especially in underdeveloping nations. Thus, these issues should be addressed immediately through global collaborations,
In conclusion, although plants and animals are important for our natural habitat as they make living experience more beautiful, i believe rising temperature and pollution of clean air are more worrying concerns as they directly challenge human esixtance.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address both views and maintain a clear position: the first body paragraph explains why species matter, while the second argues that climate change and air pollution pose more urgent threats. Relevant support includes plants helping prevent soil erosion and drought damaging crops. This meets the task well, with ideas extended and supported. To strengthen the response further, develop the comparison between the two kinds of environmental problem more explicitly. For example, explain why pollution or climate change has wider or more immediate effects than species loss, rather than relying mainly on the claim that these issues threaten human existence. Some claims, such as the link between emissions and ozone-layer damage, would also benefit from more precise explanation.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear overall progression: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present the contrasting positions, and a conclusion restates your judgement. Paragraphing is appropriate, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “However,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. Some linking is less precise or slightly mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “Therefore” and “Thus.” The sentence beginning “Therefore, the world is unable to produce enough food” also makes the connection between drought, crop destruction, and food supply somewhat abrupt. Use a wider range of referencing and causal links, and make each transition show the exact relationship between the ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant environmental vocabulary, including “extinction,” “carbon dioxide,” “global warming,” “drought,” and “food security,” so the topic is clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “addressed immediately through global collaborations.” However, noticeable spelling errors and inaccurate word choices reduce precision: “ploblems,” “attentation,” “prority,” “existance,” and “esixtance” appear, while “beautification of atmosphere” and “a range earning opportunities” are unnatural expressions. Some wording is also imprecise, such as “electronic appliances” in the discussion of emissions. Check spelling carefully and learn environmental collocations as complete phrases; this will make your vocabulary more accurate and natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “while,” “although,” and “leading to.” Most sentences remain understandable, and the argument is not seriously disrupted by grammatical errors. Some errors in agreement, articles, and sentence construction are present. For example, “other believe” needs a plural verb, and “plants … stops erosion” has a subject–verb agreement problem; “into atmosphere” also needs an article. The final sentence of the third paragraph ends with a comma rather than a full stop. Review agreement and article use, and proofread punctuation. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control while preserving the range you already attempt.
