IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is an ongoing debate that loss of species such as plants and animals is the main cause of environmental destruction while other thinks there are also major causes of environmental problems. In my opinion, deforestation and habitat loss of species are the major cause of environmental problems. In this essay, we will discuss both aspects of environmental issues.

One of the significant disadvantage of environmental challenges is deforestation because if plants are being cut out it may cause problems to both humans and animals therefore, animals and other species loss their habitat which may cause problems to entire ecosystem and plants are the main source of medicine their extinction could result in loss of treatments of various diseases. Furthermore, the process of extinction of species is irreversible and once they are completely extinct from the world we cannot be restored them again. For example, Bengal tigers are on the edge of extinction and they are supporting the environment if we are not succeed in protecting them we have to face major problems in Environment.

On the other hand, there are also some causes which are affecting the environment which includes air pollution, climate change and water pollution etc. Global warming is increasing day by day which causes rising in temperatures, melting glaciers. As a result of melting glaciers floods will occur which affects both humans and animals habitats. Moreover, water pollution is also a main cause of environmental problems because all the waste of industries thrown in oceans and rivers which is very dangerous for marine life. As a result, foods are preparing from this water cause health problems such as cholera and dysentery.

To summarize, there are also many reasons of environmental problems like air pollution and water pollution but loss of habitat and deforestation can cause more destruction to environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and state a clear position: you consider species loss and habitat destruction especially serious, while also discussing pollution and climate change. Relevant support includes the effects of extinction on ecosystems and the risks of polluted water. This meets the task well overall, but the two sides are not developed equally: the first paragraph focuses heavily on deforestation and species loss, while the alternative view is mainly listed and explained through a few consequences. The Bengal tiger example is relevant, though its role in supporting the environment is asserted rather than explained. To strengthen the response, clarify how the different problems compare in scale or impact and develop the supporting examples more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph focused on species and habitat loss, a paragraph on other environmental problems, and a conclusion. Transitions such as “On the other hand,” “Furthermore,” and “To summarize” help readers follow the discussion. The progression is generally logical, but some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, the opening sentence combines the two views in a way that makes their contrast difficult to follow, and “As a result” before the sentence about food and polluted water does not clearly show the relationship between the ideas. Paragraphs would be more cohesive if each developed one central claim in a clearer sequence, with pronouns and cause-and-effect links referring unambiguously to the relevant idea.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “deforestation,” “habitat,” “ecosystem,” “extinction,” “global warming,” and “marine life.” These terms make the environmental discussion clear, and some choices, such as “irreversible,” are effective. However, several word-choice and collocation problems reduce precision: “loss their habitat” should be “lose their habitat,” “foods are preparing from this water” does not express the intended idea naturally, and “major cause” is repeated where a more exact phrase could distinguish causes from consequences. There are also inconsistent capitalisation choices, such as “Environment.” Aim to use environmental terms accurately and select natural collocations, especially when describing pollution’s effects on health and wildlife.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional and cause-and-effect structures, as in “if plants are being cut out it may cause problems” and “once they are completely extinct…”. Meaning is generally recoverable, but some errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence boundaries remain. Examples include “other thinks” instead of “others think,” “One of the significant disadvantage,” and “we cannot be restored them again.” The long opening sentence also needs clearer punctuation and clause structure. To improve control, check subject–verb agreement and verb patterns, and divide sentences when several causes and consequences are joined together. More consistently accurate complex sentences would make your argument easier to read.
