IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
It is widely debated that whether environmental issues arise due to lose of particular species or it cause due to other environmental problems. Some people argue that tha main reason of this problem is loss of plants or animals, while others believe that it increased due to other environmental problems. Form my perspective, I stongly believe that there are more important factors that increased environmental problems such as pollution.
On the one hand, some people believe that main environmental issues arise due to loss of specie of plants and animals. This is because individuals are concerns about trees. People are cutting down significant number of trees every year for use of different purpose such as making furniture or constructing the houses. For instance, trees are very essential to maintain the air quality in the environment. If someone want to build the house for this purpose they need a wood that leads to cut down the trees. Therefore, It is essential to plant a new trees and individuals shoud not cut down the trees for their personal use they shoud switch to alternative.
On the other hand, others believe that there are more important factors that arise environmental issue. Pollution is the one of the most important factor for environmental problems. People are throwing wrappers and other waste materials in public places that leads to environmental damadge. In my opinion, I believe that this view is more convincing because pollution affects the air quality that spread various disease.
In conclusion, there are valid arguments on both sides on this issue, I believe that there are other important factors that cause environmental concerns such as throwing wrappers and waste materials in the public places.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both views and state a clear preference for the view that other environmental problems, especially pollution, are more important. The discussion of species loss includes a relevant point about trees and air quality, while the pollution paragraph identifies waste and possible effects on health. However, the response only partially develops the task: the first view focuses almost entirely on cutting trees, rather than explaining the wider consequences of losing plant and animal species, and the second view gives limited explanation of why pollution is more serious. The conclusion repeats your position but does not add support. To strengthen the response, explain the consequences of biodiversity loss and compare the scale or effects of these problems with pollution, using a specific example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. The signposts “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” help readers follow the discussion, and the main position is repeated at the end. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical, with repeated references to trees and pollution rather than a sequence of distinct supporting points. Some links are unclear or awkward, such as “If someone want to build the house for this purpose,” where the connection to the preceding point about air quality is difficult to follow. The conclusion also joins two complete ideas with a comma. Organise each body paragraph around a clear claim, explanation, and example, and use referencing and transitions more precisely.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “environmental issues,” “air quality,” “pollution,” and “waste materials,” so the reader can understand the subject and your main points. However, the range is limited and several words or phrases are repeated, particularly “environmental problems,” “trees,” and “people.” There are also noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as “specie,” “damadge,” and “concerns about trees.” Some collocations are unnatural, including “increased environmental problems” and “for use of different purpose,” which can make the meaning less precise. Build a wider set of accurate expressions for biodiversity, pollution, and environmental impacts, and check spelling and word forms carefully. More precise vocabulary would help you explain and compare the two views.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a conditional sentence beginning “If someone want to build the house” and a relative clause in “waste materials … that leads to environmental damage.” These attempts show some range, but control is inconsistent, and errors occur frequently enough to make parts of the response less clear. Examples include “whether environmental issues arise,” where the opening construction is faulty, “some people believe that main environmental issues,” which needs an article, and “a new trees,” which has a number-agreement error. Subject–verb agreement is also inconsistent in “If someone want” and “pollution … that spread.” Review articles, singular/plural forms, and agreement, then proofread each sentence to ensure its clauses connect correctly.
