IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Environment plays avery crucial role in our lives however due to urbanization taking place all over the worl we generally become ignorant to the fact that our lives depend on this particular environment.
Due to urbanization the key components are being affected are the plants and animals although there are other components as well which are at stake. Talking particularly about plants and animals the main reasons of their exploitation are deforestation, over consumption of animal products, animal testing for various beauty products and medical programs and many more. For construction of buildings forests are wiped out due to which animals are leaving their natural habitat and entering the cities.
Along with these problems people often say that there are more important environmental problems which are usage of non renewable resources such as petroleum which is the main reason for disrupting the environment particulary being the atmosphere. Discarding the chemical waste into the water which are generated by factories resulting in the destruction of the aquatic life and the quality of water. In my opinion I consider loss of plants and animals along with being irresponsible with nature entirely as an important problem because evrything is connected to each other in some manner, hence hampering with one can lead to loss to others aswell. Hence conservation of nature and all the natural components is essential to have better environment.
To conclude I would say that animals, plants, atmosphere, water all these components of nature go hand in hand and it is not possible for one to be particularly important than the other.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both views by discussing the loss of plants and animals and other problems, including fossil-fuel use and chemical water pollution. Your opinion is also present: you argue that nature’s components are interconnected and should all be conserved. However, the discussion is only partly developed. The first view has several causes, but the effects of species loss are not explained in detail; the second view is mainly a list of problems rather than a comparison of their importance. The conclusion repeats the idea that all components matter without clearly resolving which view you find more convincing. Develop each side with a specific example and explain how it supports your position.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph on species loss, a paragraph covering other environmental problems and your view, and a conclusion. This makes the overall direction understandable. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes weak, and several ideas are joined mechanically with phrases such as “Along with these problems,” “hence,” and repeated “Hence.” The second main paragraph combines pollution examples, your opinion, and a broad claim about conservation, so the reader has to follow several functions at once. Use clearer paragraphing to separate the two views from your evaluation, and make links between claims explicit—for example, explain how pollution compares with biodiversity loss rather than simply adding it to the list.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “deforestation,” “non renewable resources,” “chemical waste,” “aquatic life,” and “natural habitat.” These terms help communicate the environmental issues, and some choices show an attempt to be precise. However, word choice and collocation are sometimes inaccurate or awkward, as in “the key components are being affected are,” “disrupting the environment particularly being the atmosphere,” and “hampering with one.” Spelling errors such as “worl,” “particulary,” and “evrything” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural academic phrasing and check spelling carefully; for instance, describe emissions as “contributing to atmospheric pollution” and say that human activity “harms” ecosystems.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a cause-and-effect construction such as “forests are wiped out due to which animals are leaving their natural habitat.” However, complex structures are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to process. For example, “the key components are being affected are the plants and animals” has an incorrect clause structure, while “the chemical waste … which are generated” has agreement problems. The opening also needs punctuation between its two clauses, and “I consider loss of plants and animals … as an important problem” has an awkward grammatical pattern. Practise building accurate sentences with one main clause and a clearly attached subordinate clause, then check articles, agreement, and punctuation.
