IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Environmental degradation is one of most pressing challenges of the modern era, leading to numerous debates regarding which issue demands the most urgent attention. While some argue that extinction of specific flora and fauna is most critical crisis, other contend that alternative ecological concern pose a greater threat.

On the other hand, the lose of plant and animal species is deeply concerning issue with irreversible consequences. Every living creature has a role in maintaining the balance of nature. When a species disappears, it can effect other animal, plant and even human beings. One major reason for this problem is deforestation, as forest are being cut down to build roads, houses and factories. As a result, many animals lose their natural habitats and struggle to survive. If this continues, future generations may never get the chance to see some of these species.

On the other hand, many people believe that issues such as climate change, water pollution and air pollution are more urgent. These problem affect not only animals but also the daily lives of human beings. For example, polluted air can causing breathing difficulties, while contaminated water can spread diseases. In addition, rising temperature can lead to drought, floods and other natural calamites. These situations can damage crops, destroy homes and create difficulties for farmer and ordinary families.

In my opinion , both views are important, but I believe the environmental problem should be considered together rather than separately. For example climate change and deforestation can destroy animal habitats and increase the risk of extinction. Therefore government should take strict action against pollution, protect forest and encourage people adopt friendly habits.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and give a clear position: species loss is serious, while climate change and pollution also threaten people and ecosystems, so these problems should be considered together. Relevant explanations include habitat loss through deforestation and the effects of polluted air and water. This meets the task well, and the link you make between climate change, deforestation and extinction begins to show how the issues interact. However, some points remain general: the consequences of species loss are asserted rather than illustrated with a specific example, and the proposed government action is not explained in detail. Developing one or two examples and showing more precisely why your combined approach is preferable would make the response more fully supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall structure, moving from an introduction to the two views and then to your opinion. Paragraphing helps the reader follow this progression, and phrases such as “As a result” and “For example” signal relationships between ideas. However, “On the other hand” introduces both main-view paragraphs, although the first is not clearly contrasted with a preceding view; this makes the linking somewhat mechanical. Some connections within the final paragraph are also compressed, particularly the move from the combined nature of the problems to government action. Use a wider range of transitions suited to the relationship between ideas, and make references between sentences more explicit to strengthen the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “extinction,” “deforestation,” “natural habitats,” “contaminated water” and “drought.” These choices communicate the environmental issues clearly, and phrases such as “irreversible consequences” show an attempt to use less common language. Some word-choice and form errors reduce precision, however: “the lose of plant and animal species” should be “the loss,” and “friendly habits” does not clearly express environmentally responsible behaviour. There are also awkward combinations such as “alternative ecological concern.” Aim for more natural collocations and check word forms, while retaining the useful topic-specific vocabulary already present.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional and cause-and-effect structures: “If this continues, future generations may never get the chance…” and “When a species disappears, it can…” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Examples include missing or incorrect articles in “one of most pressing challenges” and “a deeply concerning issue,” agreement in “These problem affect,” and verb forms in “can causing.” There are also plural and agreement problems in “forest are being cut down” and “difficulties for farmer.” These errors rarely prevent understanding, but they limit accuracy. Review articles, subject–verb agreement, plurals and verb patterns, then proofread punctuation and spacing.
