IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays, environmental problems an increasing around the world. Some people believe that the loss of plants and animals species is the biggest environment problem, while others think that there are more serious issues. In my opinion, climate change and population are also major concerns, but the loss of species is equally important.
on the other hand, the extinction of plants and animals can have serious effect on the environment. Every species play an important role in maintaning the natural balance. For example, bees help plants grow by spreading pollen, while many birds control imsects populations. If these species disappear, the food chain may be disturbed. Furthermore, forests and plants provide oxygen, food, and shelter for many living things.
On the other hand, there are several other environmental problems that deserve attention. Air and water pollution affect both humans and animals. For instance polluted air can cause breathing problems while dirty water can spread disease. Climate change in another serious issue because it causis rising
temperature, floods, droughts, and melting glaciers. These problems can damage agriculture and make life difficult for millions of people.
In my view, all environmental problems are connected. pollution and climate change can destroy natural habitats, which leade to the extinction of different species. Governments should introduce strict gowermental laws, promote renewable energy, and encourege people to plant trees and reduce plastic waste. Individuals can also help by recycling and keeping their surroundings clean.
In conclusion, the loss of plant and animal species is a serious environmental problem, but it is not the only one.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and give a clear position: species loss is serious, while climate change and population-related concerns also matter. The discussion of biodiversity is relevant and supported by examples such as bees pollinating plants and birds controlling insect populations; you also explain consequences of pollution and climate change. This meets the task well, and the link you make between habitat damage and extinction adds a broader perspective. However, some points are less fully developed: population is mentioned in the introduction but not explained later, and the conclusion mainly restates the issue rather than reinforcing why you consider species loss equally important. Develop that comparison with a specific reason or example to make the response more fully supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall structure, moving from the first view to other environmental problems, then to your opinion and a conclusion. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and examples generally follow the claims they support. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical: both main discussion paragraphs begin with “on the other hand,” although the first presents the species-loss view rather than a contrast with your own previous argument. The opening paragraph also introduces population without a clear link to the later discussion. Improve progression by using transitions that show the precise relationship between ideas, and use referencing or linking phrases to connect the final paragraph more smoothly to the examples already discussed.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “natural balance,” “food chain,” “renewable energy,” “habitats,” and “agriculture.” These choices make the environmental discussion clear, and you attempt more specific language rather than relying only on basic terms. Some word-choice and spelling errors, however, reduce precision: “plants and animals species,” “imsects,” “causis,” and “gowermental laws” are inaccurate, while “population” is not clearly specified as an environmental concern. There are also opportunities to use more precise collocations, such as describing species as “playing a role in maintaining ecological balance.” Proofread spelling and choose exact terms for the environmental processes you mean; this would make your vocabulary more controlled and flexible.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “If these species disappear, the food chain may be disturbed” and a relative clause in “which leade to the extinction.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur across the response. Examples include the opening fragment-like construction “environmental problems an increasing,” subject–verb agreement in “Every species play,” and missing or incorrect verb forms in “Climate change in another serious issue.” Articles and plural forms also need attention, as in “have serious effect.” Punctuation is inconsistent in places, particularly around introductory phrases and lists. Check sentence completeness, agreement, and articles during revision, while retaining the complex structures you already attempt.
