IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

SOME PERSONS ARGUE THAT THE LOSS OF INVASIVE PLANTS AND ANIMALS SPECIES CAUSE SEVOUR ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEM WHILE OTHERS THINK THAT MANY OTHER KINDS OF POLLUTION ARE MOST RESPONSIBLE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL DEGREDATION.IN THIS ESSAY I AM GOING TO DISSCUS BOTH POINTS WITH EXAMPLES ALSO SHARE MY PRESPECTIVE .

ON ONE HAND PRESENCE OF VARIETY OF PLANTS RESPONSIBLE FOR BEST ENVIRONMENT FOR EXAMPLE TREES ARE MAJOR SOURCE OF OYGEN FOR HUMANS BIRDS AND ANIMALES SECONDLY MANTAIN WEATHER CONDITIONS BY CLEANING AIR .

IN ADDITION PLANTS INCREASE NUTRIENTS AMOINT IN SOIL WHICH INTURN ENHANCE SOIL FERTILIOTY ,STABLE GROUND WATER TABLE .IN ADDITION MANY PLANT SPECIES REDUCE SMOKE AND LOWEST TEMERATURE IMPROVE AIR QUALITY AND STOP POLLUTION .MOROVER WATER EVAPORATION IS ALSO TAKE PLACE BY PLANTS IMPROVE MOISTURE LEVEL IN ENVIRONMENTAL .HOWEVER PRESENSE OF TREES MAKES SOIL STRUCTURE STRONG AGAINS EXCESSIVE RAIN .IF THERE ARE NO TRES SOIL WILL GO WITH RAIN .SO PLANTS ARE VERY IMPORTANY FOR NATURE .

ON OTHER HAND ANIMALS ALSO CRUCIAL FOR ENVIRONMENT FOR EXAMPLE BEES ARE GREATEST AGENT FOR POLLINATION .BEES HELPS THE PLANTS TO GROWN IF THERE IS NO BEES MAY BE PLANTS NEVER GROW BEES TRANSFER POLLEN GRAINS TO FAR FLANG AREAS AND WHEN CONDITIONS BECOMES SUITABLE PLANTS GROW THERE.SIMILARLY SOME ANIMALS EAT DEAD PARTS OF PLANTS AND DANGROUS SPECIES WHO CAUSES DISEASE TO NEIGBHOURING PLANTS SO THEY CAN CLEAN ENVIRONMENT ,

IN CONCLUSION I STRONGLY BELIEVE THAT BOTH ANIMALS AND PLANTS CRUCIAL TO MANTAIN ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS ,OVERCOME ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTIONS

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You discuss the importance of plants and animals, giving relevant examples such as trees providing oxygen and bees pollinating plants, and your conclusion indicates that both matter. However, the task asks you to compare species loss with other major environmental problems. Your response focuses almost entirely on the benefits of plants and animals and does not explain the alternative view about problems such as pollution or climate change. Your own position is also only briefly stated, rather than clearly argued and supported. The response is six words below the required minimum, and the limited development makes the discussion feel incomplete. To improve, address both views directly, explain why some people consider other environmental threats more serious, and develop your opinion with a specific example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs about plants and animals, and a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “On one hand,” “In addition,” and “Similarly” help signal relationships between points. However, the overall progression is not fully clear because the body paragraphs explain the value of plants and animals rather than organising a comparison of the two views in the question. Several connectors are repeated or used mechanically, and some sentences run together, making relationships between ideas difficult to follow. For example, the sequence about bees and plant growth contains several claims without clear sentence boundaries. Use one paragraph for each viewpoint, connect each example explicitly to that viewpoint, and use accurate punctuation to make the progression easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant environmental vocabulary, including “pollination,” “soil fertility,” “ground water table,” and “air quality,” which shows an attempt to discuss the topic specifically. However, the range is limited and many spelling and word-choice errors make parts of the response difficult to understand, such as “seavour,” “degredation,” and “prespective.” Some phrases are also unnatural or imprecise, including “best environment” and “greatest agent for pollination.” These errors are noticeable throughout and sometimes obscure your intended meaning. Build a reliable set of topic vocabulary and check spelling carefully; also learn common collocations, such as “maintain environmental balance” and “loss of species,” so your ideas sound clearer and more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You attempt to connect ideas in longer sentences, for example when explaining how bees transfer pollen and how plants affect soil and moisture. However, sentence structures are often incomplete or inaccurately formed, and errors frequently make the meaning hard to follow. Examples include “Trees are major source of oxygen” and “Bees helps the plants to grown,” where articles, agreement, and verb forms are not controlled. Several clauses are joined without clear punctuation, as in the discussion of bees, while the conclusion also lacks a complete, well-formed sentence. Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then combine them using conjunctions. Check subject–verb agreement, articles, plural forms, and sentence boundaries during revision.
