IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Some believe that the loss of particular species of plants and animals are the main enviormental problem of current period while others argue that there are more crucial enviormental problems than that. I believe that there are several other issues currenlty which are more important than the plants and animals. Both views are discussed in the following paragraphs.
On one hand some believe the biggest loss is species of plants and animals. This is due to the disturbance in the ecosystem. This is caused when plants and animal species get exctint. This distrupts the chain balance of the enviorment . In addition it leads to loss of resources which are important for enviorment. For instance, the loss of herbal plants which were used for making effective medicine is now creating a issue for treatments. However animls play role in maintaining balance of te forest specially the food chain cycle.
On the other hand others argue that there are more potential issues rather than loss of species of plants and animals. This is due to current enviormental problems such as global warming. Also this is caused by use of various technologies which emits radiation like ultraviolet rays into the enviorment. In addition it is observed that the weather is currently facing severe fluctuations. For instance, the seasons do not apppear in their month, the heat has taken over severly in india where recenlt india faced severe red zone in peak may whch harmed many people.
In my opinion, i believe that currently the problems are more related global warming which is causing great impact on humans as well as plants and animals.
To conclude, the potential problems related to other issues are more crucial than the loss of species of animals and plants. This is due to global problems which are affecting every living being in this period.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and give a clear opinion: you explain how species loss can disrupt ecosystems and reduce useful resources, then argue that global warming has wider effects on people and nature. The examples of medicinal plants and extreme heat in India are relevant. However, the discussion is uneven: the first view is explained mainly through ecosystem balance, while the second would benefit from clearer explanation of how global warming affects multiple regions or systems. The claim that technology emits ultraviolet rays is also unclear and needs accurate support. Your conclusion restates your position, but the essay would be stronger if each main point were developed with a specific cause-and-effect explanation and a more precise example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your opinion, and a conclusion. Signposts such as “On one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “To conclude” make the progression easy to follow. This meets the lower-band expectations for coherent organisation and also shows some features of stronger progression. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical: several sentences begin with “This is due to” or “In addition,” and the links between claims are not always explicit. For example, the move from technology to weather fluctuations needs a clearer explanation of their relationship. Use a wider range of linking methods and refer back to ideas precisely, so the essay flows through reasoning rather than relying mainly on paragraph markers.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “ecosystem,” “food chain,” “global warming,” and “weather fluctuations,” which helps communicate the main ideas. However, the range is limited and several word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems reduce precision, as in “chain balance,” “a issue for treatments,” and “red zone in peak may.” Environmental terms are also repeated rather than varied, and misspellings such as “enviormental,” “exctint,” and “severly” are noticeable. These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the general argument, but some phrases require effort to interpret. Build a more accurate set of topic collocations and check spelling, while choosing precise expressions for impacts, causes, and examples.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, and the overall meaning is usually understandable. However, the range is limited, and complex constructions are not consistently controlled. For example, “the loss … are” has subject–verb disagreement, while “which emits” does not agree with the plural subject “technologies.” Articles and sentence boundaries also need attention, as in “creating a issue” and the run-on punctuation around “environment.” Capitalisation is inconsistent in “i believe” and “india.” These errors sometimes make relationships between ideas less clear, particularly in the longer sentence about technology and radiation. Practise checking agreement, articles, and punctuation, and build complex sentences around one clearly expressed cause-and-effect relationship at a time.
