IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
IN THIS CONTEMPORARAY ERA THERE IS HUGE DEBET ABOUT ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES. SOME POEPLE OPINE THAT EXTINCTION OF CERTAIN SPECIES OF PLANTS AND ANIMALS ARE MAJOUR ONE, WHILE OTHER ARGUE THAT SOME OTHER ECOLOGICAL CONCERNS ARE MORE IMPORTANT SUCH AS, GLOBAL WARMING, SOIL DEGRADATION AND CLIMATE CHNAGE. THIS ESSAY EXPLAIN BOTH VIEWS BEFORE REACHING TO CONCLUSION INCLUDING MY OWN VIEWPOINT.
THE KEY REASON OF LOSSING PARTICULAR SPECIES OF PLANTS AND ANIMALS WAS DEFORESTATION AND POLLUTION. NOWADAYS, URBANIZATION PLAYS A KEY ROLE IN VANNISHING FORESTS BECAUSE BUILD AND INFRASTRUCTURE AND RESIDENTIOL BUILDING GOVERNMENT CUT A LOT OF FOREST, IN TERM OF DEVELOPMENT. ANOTHER KEY FACTOR IS ILLEGAL WOOD SMUGGLINGS. SOME INDIVIDUALS MADA A BUSINESS AROUND LOGGING AND SELL IT INTO FOREIGN COUNTIRES TO GENERATE A PROFIT. AS RESULT OF THIS ANIMAL AND BIRDS HAVE TO MOVE TO LIMITED AREA WHERE SOME HIGH RANK ANIMAL KILL THEM. HOWEVER, FEW HUMANS ALSO HUNTING ANIMALS FOR MAKE MONEY. IF IN FUTURE GOVERNMENT CAN'T LOOK INTO THEN, CERTAIN SPECIES COMPLETELY EXTINCT FROM THE NATION.
HOWEVER, SOME OTHER ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS LIKE GLOBAL WARMING AND CLIMATE CHANGE ALSO PLAY SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN HUMAN AND ANIMAL SURVIVAL. SO, GOVERNMENT ALSO HAVE LOOK INTO THESE ISSUE BECAUSE HUMAN ARE HIGHLY RELY ON THE NATURE AND HIGH AMOUNT OF POLLUTION AND GLOBAL WARMING CAN PUT EFFECT ON WEATHER PATTERNS, SUCH AS BECUASE OF THIS ECOLOGICAL ISSUES AGRICULTURAL SECTOR EXTREMELY AFFECTED. AS A RESULT, OVERALL FOOD CHAIN SHOLD BE COLLAPSE.
IN MY POINT OF VIEW, ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS SUCH AS CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL WARMING HAVE MORE IMPORTANCE BECASUE IT DIRECTLLY AFFECT ON SURVIVAL ALL SPECIES WETHER IT ABOUT TO HUMANS OR PLANT AND ANIMAL, HOWEVER NEGLACTICTING PLANT AND ANIMAL LOSS CAN'T BE SOLUTION.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both sides of the question and state a position: the essay explains species loss, discusses climate change and global warming, and concludes that broader climate-related problems affect all species. The examples of deforestation, logging and hunting are relevant, as is the link between changing weather and agriculture. This fits the criterion because the main parts of the task are covered, but some ideas are developed more fully than others. The species-loss paragraph gives several causes, while the discussion of other environmental problems mainly asserts effects on weather and food supply without explaining them in detail. To strengthen the response, compare the scale or consequences of the two types of problem and support your opinion with a specific example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph on species loss, a paragraph on other environmental problems, and a concluding opinion. Linking expressions such as “However,” “As a result,” and “In my point of view” help signal the direction of the argument, and the reader can follow the main progression. This is a coherent structure, with some features of stronger cohesion, but connections are occasionally mechanical or unclear. For example, “As a result of this” does not clearly identify which preceding cause leads to animals moving into limited areas, and the final paragraph repeats the position without fully drawing the two views together. Make cause-and-effect links explicit and use the conclusion to compare the arguments.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You attempt topic-specific vocabulary, including “deforestation,” “urbanization,” “illegal wood smuggling,” “weather patterns,” and “food chain.” These choices show awareness of the environmental topic and allow the main ideas to be understood. However, the range is limited by repeated general terms such as “key,” “important,” and “problem,” while inaccurate word forms, spelling and collocations are noticeable: “lossing,” “vannishing,” “major one,” and “put effect on” make parts of the message harder to process. Aim to learn environmental phrases as complete collocations and check spelling and word forms carefully. More precise wording would help you express relationships between causes and consequences without relying on broad or awkward phrases.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You use both simple statements and attempts at longer, complex sentences, for example the sentence beginning “However, some other environmental problems…” and the conditional “If in future government can’t look into then…”. This shows an effort to vary sentence structure. However, control is inconsistent: errors in agreement, verb forms, articles and sentence construction sometimes make the meaning difficult to follow. Examples include “other argue,” “government also have look,” and “overall food chain shold be collapse.” The conditional sentence also lacks a clear object for “look into.” Practise building accurate subject–verb patterns and complete clauses before adding complexity. Check each sentence for a clear subject and verb, and use punctuation to separate long ideas.
