IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
A group of people claim that extinction of flora and fauna are the major environmental problems to focus on. However, some other people argue that there are some other crucial situations related to environment which need more attention.Thsis essay will explore both of the viewpoints and argue in the favour of second stance.
To commence with the claim, that issue of plants and animals being extincted need to be addressed at higher authority level. Therefore, we can protect the nature. They explain that plants and animals are far more important in maintaining the ecosystem. Hence, we need to make policies which could assist in cessation of extinction. According to their suggestion, if no actio is taken to halt the extinction then soon we would be deprived of crops which are being used as staple foods.
Nevertheless, the proponents of the later statement argue that we need to focus on the root causes of extermination. They claim that climate is the mother of nature. Therefore, to protect the plants and animals who are at the verge of extinction, we should work on making climate batter. In this era of technology, global warming is deteroirating the climate by polluting it with carcinogenic elements. This does not only harm plants and animals but also badly affects humans. For example, the polar bear is being extincted because of lack food and loss of habitat during the climatic changes.
As far as my opinion is concerned, I support the latter explained view. We as humans should stop activities which are dangerous and cause disruption of environment. By doing so, not only we be able to protect animals and plants but also other creatures on earth. For instance, loss of habitat has culminated in irreversible extinction of Iranian lion.
In conclusion, we need to work on making climate clean to stop the extinction of plants and animal species. Because fragmentation of ecosystem would eventually jeoparadize the biodiversity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and state a clear preference for tackling broader environmental causes, especially climate change. The discussion of species loss includes a relevant point about crops and ecosystem balance, while the climate paragraph explains that environmental damage affects both wildlife and people. These features meet the task well. However, the two positions are not developed equally: the first view is supported mainly by a general claim about staple foods, and the second relies on broad assertions rather than explaining how climate change drives species decline. The examples of polar bears and the Iranian lion are relevant, but the latter is not clearly connected to your proposed solution. Develop each view with a specific cause-and-effect explanation and make your own reasoning more explicit.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, a paragraph stating your opinion, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “Nevertheless” and “As far as my opinion is concerned” helps readers follow the shift between positions. This gives the essay a coherent progression. Some linking is mechanical or unclear, however. “To commence with the claim” and “According to their suggestion” do not identify the viewpoint precisely, while “the latter explained view” makes the reference less natural. The conclusion repeats the climate argument but introduces ecosystem fragmentation without developing it earlier. Use more direct topic sentences, connect examples explicitly to the point they support, and ensure each paragraph advances the argument rather than repeating it.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of topic vocabulary, including “ecosystem,” “global warming,” “habitat,” “biodiversity,” and “irreversible extinction.” These choices show an effort to discuss environmental issues precisely, and the meaning is generally clear. Some less common expressions are inaccurate or awkwardly collocated, such as “extincted,” “climate is the mother of nature,” and “making climate batter.” There are also spelling errors, including “Thsis,” “deteroirating,” and “jeoparadize,” which reduce the accuracy of the vocabulary. Aim for natural, precise combinations and check spelling carefully. For example, use established terms such as “become extinct,” “climate conditions,” and “improve air quality” rather than translating expressions literally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional and cause-and-effect structures: “if no actio is taken … then soon we would be deprived” and “By doing so, not only we be able to protect…”. This shows some range, and the main ideas remain understandable. Some grammatical errors persist in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction. For instance, “extinction of flora and fauna are” has a subject–verb agreement problem, and “not only we be able” needs a correctly formed verb phrase and inversion. The final sentence beginning “Because fragmentation…” is a fragment, and punctuation is missing after “attention.” Review agreement and clause boundaries, and practise forming accurate conditional and “not only … but also” sentences.
