IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Environment refers to areas surrounding the problems therefore refers to the situations happening in an area. Problem relating to specific species of plants & animals are of great concern. Whereas other problem including pollution, erosion, landslide are more important problems, therefore I agree the these environmental problems namely pollution are most important in contributing it.
Firstly, the pollution is the core environmental problem that creates all other different problem, it have different domains for eg air, water pollution moreover pollution creates a bad environment which is why many species die for eg water pollution (throwing, dumping the wastage) in river is damaging the marine life, secondly the landslide is also the most important environmental problem as it destroys natural habitat & lifestyles which is caused by cutting of trees, for eg in mountainous regions of Pakistan, deforestation has occurred due to which landslide happened.
Secondly environmental problem causing harm to species of plants and animals is somehow linked to core problems such as pollution , erosion ,and landsliding. For example after landsliding all the plants and animal habitat are killed or torn off from mountains and jungle.
At the end , we can say that the most important and impactful environmental problem is the pollution that is created by human , which is what is causing the loss of species of plants and animals getting killed.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You give a clear overall view that pollution is the most important environmental problem and connect it to species loss, using examples such as polluted rivers and deforestation in Pakistan. However, the discussion is only partial: the view that the loss of particular species is itself the main problem is not explained in its own right, and the comparison between the two positions remains limited. Several points are asserted rather than developed, especially the claim that pollution creates all other problems. The conclusion repeats your position but does not add a developed final comparison. The response is also 25 words below the required minimum, leaving less space to explain and support both views. Develop each side with a reason and a specific example before stating your judgement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the use of “Firstly,” “Secondly” and “At the end” signals stages in the argument. However, the overall progression is not consistently clear: the first body paragraph discusses pollution and landslides, while the second returns to species loss without clearly distinguishing this as the opposing view. Connections between claims are sometimes abrupt, and the repeated use of “for example” does not always make the relationship between evidence and point clear. Some sentences combine several ideas, making the line of reasoning difficult to follow. Give each body paragraph a distinct purpose, use clear topic sentences, and link each example explicitly to the claim it supports.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant environmental vocabulary, including “pollution,” “deforestation,” “natural habitat” and “marine life,” so the topic is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and some wording is repetitive, particularly repeated uses of “problem” and “environmental problem.” Several expressions are inaccurate or awkward, such as “pollution is the core environmental problem that creates all other different problem” and “the plants and animal habitat are killed.” These choices sometimes make the intended meaning less precise. Aim for more accurate collocations and a wider range of terms for causes and consequences, while checking word forms and plural forms. For instance, distinguish between pollution damaging habitats and species becoming endangered or extinct.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt to connect ideas in longer sentences, for example with “which is why” and “which is caused by,” but these complex structures are often faulty, and many sentences contain errors that make reading difficult. Examples include “it have different domains,” “I agree the these environmental problems,” and “the most important and impactful environmental problem is the pollution that is created by human.” Sentence boundaries and punctuation are also inconsistent, as seen in the long opening sentence and missing spaces around punctuation. Use shorter, complete sentences while checking subject–verb agreement, articles and plural forms. Then practise combining clauses accurately, rather than joining several claims into one sentence.
