IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Nowadays, there have been several environmental issues that need to be addressed. Some would say that massive loss in biodiversity is the main environmental problem that needs to be attended with urgency. However, some would argue that there are numerous other environmental issues that are far more important than the loss of some biodiversities. At some point, extinction of some plants and animals could be a serious concern, nevertheless, climate change and pollution have a wider impact on the planet and the well- being of the humans.
Some people would say that tere are far more greater issues to be faced rather than the problems pertaining to biodiversity. However, biodoversity plays an important role in maintaining the balance of nature. For example, bees help the flowers to pollinate, which serves as a habitat for some insects.
On the other hand, climate change and pollution could be unsafe for the population and must be given attention to. Climate change if not addressed properly could harm several people and species. Same goes to the increasingly

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify both viewpoints and state a position: biodiversity loss is serious, but climate change and pollution have wider effects. The example of bees and pollination is relevant and begins to explain why species matter. However, the discussion is only partial: the alternative environmental problems are named but not explained with a specific consequence or example, and the biodiversity argument is also left undeveloped. The final sentence stops at “Same goes to the increasingly,” so the response has no completed conclusion and your opinion is not fully reinforced. The required minimum of 250 words is not met, which limits how fully you can address and support the task. Develop each side with a clear reason and example, then finish with a concise conclusion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic overall structure: an introduction presents the issue, followed by paragraphs signalled with “Some people” and “On the other hand.” This helps the reader recognise the two perspectives, and the position in the introduction gives the response a direction. However, progression is limited because the body paragraphs contain very little development, and the final paragraph breaks off mid-sentence. The opening body paragraph also begins by repeating the idea that other issues are more important before shifting to biodiversity, which makes its focus less clear. Use each paragraph to develop one viewpoint in a logical sequence, connect examples explicitly to the claim, and provide a complete concluding paragraph. More precise referencing would also help clarify how each point relates to the question.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some topic-appropriate vocabulary, including “biodiversity,” “extinction,” “pollination,” “climate change,” and “pollution.” These terms show an adequate range for discussing environmental issues, and the main meaning is generally understandable. There are, however, noticeable inaccuracies and awkward combinations that reduce precision: “attended with urgency” is not a natural collocation, “some biodiversities” is unsuitable for this meaning, and “far more greater” is an incorrect form. Spelling errors such as “tere” and “biodoversity” also detract from control. Aim for accurate, natural phrases rather than adding complexity: for example, “addressed urgently,” “loss of biodiversity,” and “far more serious.” Proofreading would help you use your relevant vocabulary more effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms. For instance, the introduction uses a contrast with “However,” and the sentence beginning “Climate change if not addressed properly” attempts a conditional structure. Most of the intended meaning can be followed, but some sentence construction and punctuation need attention. In “Climate change if not addressed properly could harm several people and species,” commas should set off the conditional phrase. “Same goes to…” is an incomplete construction in this context, and the response ends with an unfinished sentence, so the final idea cannot be understood. The sentence about bees and flowers also contains a relative clause whose reference is unclear. Practise completing each sentence and checking clause boundaries, punctuation, and clear subject-reference; this will make your developing range more accurate.
