Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response identifies the topic and begins to explain why plants and animals matter, noting that losing a species can disrupt the food chain. However, it does not discuss the opposing view that other environmental problems may be more important, and the promised explanation of the writer’s opinion is not completed. The opening says the essay will examine both sides, but the body stops before developing either side or giving relevant examples. The response is also substantially below the required 250 words, so the task is only minimally addressed. To improve, present a clear opinion, explain both viewpoints with specific reasons, and support them with examples before concluding.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an introductory paragraph is followed by a paragraph beginning “On the one hand,” which signals a viewpoint. The ideas within that paragraph are connected through “otherwise” and “moreover,” and the food-chain point gives the discussion a starting direction. However, the response ends mid-sentence, so there is no completed progression, second viewpoint, or conclusion. Some linking is also awkward: “otherwise” does not clearly express the intended relationship, and “moreover” introduces an unfinished idea. Use complete paragraphs for each side, connect each claim to its explanation, and finish with a concise conclusion that restates your position.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some relevant topic vocabulary, including “environment,” “particular plants and animals,” “food chain,” and “vital role.” These choices show an attempt to address environmental issues, but the range is limited and several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “environment problem,” “environment life,” and “a defect in food chain.” Spelling errors in “losse” also reduce accuracy. These problems sometimes make the intended meaning less clear. Build a more precise set of topic phrases and check spelling and collocations; for example, refer to “environmental problems,” “ecosystems,” and “disruption to the food chain.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both a complex opening sentence and a cause-and-effect structure, as in “a losse of one of them can be cause a defect in food chain.” However, control is inconsistent: the opening joins two independent clauses with a comma, “this essay” begins with an incorrect capitalisation, and “can be cause” has an incorrect verb form. Articles and sentence boundaries are also problematic, and the final sentence is incomplete after “and.” These errors make parts of the response difficult to follow. Practise forming complete sentences with accurate verb patterns, articles, and punctuation, then proofread for capital letters and sentence endings.
