IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is argued that, some people think that main reason for environmental problem in the present generation is due to loss of particular species of plants and animals. However others believe that, there are many reasons for environmental problems rather than loss of plants and animals. Although loss of important species is a critical issue, I believe there are other reasons for environmental problems like pollution and climate changes.

On the one hand, the loss of precious plants and animal species can have serious impact on the society. This is because every animal has different role in the environment. If certain animals disappear, it creates imbalance in the food chain or other domains. For instance, if tiger's disappeared the deer's or other animals which was hunted by the tiger will damage the forest by eating grass. To solve these problem the the tiger's are required.

On the other hand I believe that, there are many important reasons for environmental issues than loss of species. The main reason for environmental problem is pollution in both air and water. This is due to industries waste management. For example, in COVID time the leakage at the LG polymers in one city. Which leads to pollution in air as well as water. Other reason would be due to climatic changes like high temperature or floods in some areas. If an area is effected by floods it leads to damaging the crops and building too. In addition due to high temperature also the soil gets dry and losses it's fertility. Therefore, these problems need attention from governments.

In conclusion, although some species are important and loosing it was a serious issue, I believe that there are other important reason for environmental problems such as pollution and climate change.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state a clear opinion: species loss is serious, but pollution and climate change are more important concerns. The two body paragraphs give relevant explanations, including the food-chain example and the effects of floods and heat on crops and soil. However, some points are less fully developed than others. The tiger example is difficult to follow and does not clearly explain how the proposed solution would work, while the LG Polymers incident is mentioned without enough context to show its environmental impact. To strengthen the response, explain each example more precisely and develop the comparison between species loss and wider environmental threats.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion that restates your position. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” helps readers follow the discussion. Some connections, however, are mechanical or unclear. For example, “Which leads to pollution…” is a sentence fragment, and the link between the tiger’s disappearance and the proposed need for tigers is not explained. The repeated use of “For example” and “Therefore” also makes cohesion somewhat formulaic. Use clearer references and connect each example directly to the point it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “food chain,” “industries,” “climatic changes,” “fertility,” and “pollution,” so the main ideas are generally understandable. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “loss of precious plants and animal species.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise: “main reason for environmental problem,” “industries waste management,” and “damage the forest by eating grass” do not express the intended meanings naturally. Spelling and word-form errors such as “loosing” and “effected” also reduce accuracy. Build a more precise range of environmental collocations and check word forms and spelling during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including conditional sentences such as “If certain animals disappear…” and a concession in the introduction. Meaning is usually recoverable, but some errors in sentence structure, agreement, articles, and punctuation remain. For instance, “Which leads to pollution…” is a fragment, while “the deer's or other animals which was hunted” has problems with agreement and sentence construction. The opening also has awkward clause structure in “It is argued that, some people think…”. Practise forming complete sentences and checking subject–verb agreement, articles, and punctuation. More accurate control of these patterns would make your arguments easier to read.
