IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The first view says that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals in some respect it is correct because the species now a days are endangered due to environmenmtal problems like chakkor, markhor etc .The deforestation is the major cause of environmental problem as well as the many plants are going to cut and due to the cutting of plants many species become homeless and die.
The second view is that there are more important environmental problems which we are facing now a days like flooding, sudden climate change , the span of summer is greater while on the other hand the span of winter is somehow shorter and many other problem like that.
In my point of view, both the above problems are considered harmful for humans and animals. For example, due to the destroing of species the food chain is going to distrub which cause many problems in our lives.Due to environmental problems, the weather conditions now a days become unpredictable .The span of summer seasons as compared to the previous those years become too long simultaneously the span of winter season has become short. The hot sunlight rays have burnt the crop, wheat and many other vegetables and trees. Due to unpredictable weather conditions they cause flooding. Due to flooding many crops , wheat ,vegetable and fruit trees are destroyed .That cause a severe shortage of food among the humans and animals. This is the very pathetic condition.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You discuss both views and give your own position, so the response addresses the main parts of the prompt. The examples of endangered chakkor and markhor, deforestation, changing seasons and flooding are relevant, and you explain some consequences, such as disruption to the food chain and crop losses. However, the discussion is brief and several points are asserted rather than developed; the view that other environmental problems are more important is not clearly weighed against species loss. Your opinion that both are harmful is present, but it does not fully resolve which you consider more important. The response is also 232 words, below the required 250, which limits the opportunity to explain and support the ideas further.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic overall structure: it introduces the two views in separate paragraphs and then gives your opinion and supporting consequences. This makes the main direction understandable. However, progression within the final paragraph is difficult to follow because several effects are linked in a long chain, from species loss and weather changes to crop damage and food shortages. Connectors such as “Due to” and “The span” are repeated, and some links are unclear—for example, “Due to unpredictable weather conditions they cause flooding” does not clearly identify what “they” refers to. Use clearer topic sentences and divide the final discussion into shorter, logically ordered points, with more precise referencing and varied transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the general subject, including “endangered,” “deforestation,” “food chain,” “unpredictable” and “flooding.” These terms help make the examples relevant. However, the range is limited and several choices or forms are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the meaning less clear: “the species now a days,” “the destroing of species,” and “the weather conditions … become unpredictable” need more natural phrasing. There are also spelling errors such as “environmenmtal,” “distrub” and “destroing.” Aim to learn accurate environmental collocations and check spelling; more precise wording would help distinguish species decline from broader climate and weather problems.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences with cause-and-effect links, such as the explanation that deforestation leaves species homeless and that flooding destroys crops. However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and complex sentences are often difficult to control. For example, “The first view says … in some respect it is correct” joins two independent clauses without suitable punctuation, while “Due to unpredictable weather conditions they cause flooding” has an unclear subject and faulty construction. There are recurring problems with verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence boundaries, including “many other problem” and “the weather conditions … become.” Practise building shorter, accurate sentences first, then combine ideas using controlled subordinate clauses and correct punctuation.
