IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

There is difference of argument between people about environmental problems . Some of them believe that it due to loss of particular species of plants and animals. While on the other hand some argue that there are more important environmental problems. If we see these both arguments more closely they are actually related to each other . The loss of several species and animals is linked to several environmental factors either directly or indirectly.

Recent studies reveal us that there is a massive loss recorded in species of plants and animals. One of them is the ending specie of "White Rhinos" . In africa there are only two female rhinos left . It is because they were not able to adjust with this rapidly changing temperature. Similar case with plants several species have diminished due to several environmental factors like increase in global warming due to which the ozone layer which protects the earth has become thinner and thinner leading to increase in temperature

In contrast if we put light on the the factor which is root cause of these environmental problems is increase in population . Increase in population has lead to expansion of societies . Which has lead to several problems like deforestation , global warming and many other devastating factors.

In conclusion , if we need humans need to survive on earth we need to stop this . We should take the responsibility of environment. If it keeps on going like this we are not behind from a stage where there will be no animals and plants . At the end we humans will have to face the consequences . We should provide awareness among people about the safety of the enivronment and the importance of plants and animals out their in our lifes . With proper awareness and planning we will be able to solve both of these issues .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You discuss both views: the second paragraph focuses on species loss, while the third identifies population growth and its effects as broader environmental problems. Your conclusion also gives a general position that both issues need to be addressed. However, the discussion is only partly developed. The explanation of species loss relies mainly on the white rhino example, and the claim that changing temperatures caused this loss is not clearly supported. The other view is introduced through population growth, but its importance is asserted rather than compared with species loss. Make your opinion explicit in the introduction and develop each side with clearer reasons and relevant examples. The response meets the required length; eight words copied from the task prompt were excluded from the count.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction to the two views and then a conclusion. Paragraphing helps the reader identify the main sections, and phrases such as “In contrast” signal a change of focus. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear: the discussion moves from rhinos to the ozone layer without explaining the connection, and the population-growth paragraph ends before its effects are fully developed. Some linking is repetitive or awkward, including “several environmental factors” and “if we need humans need to survive.” Improve cohesion by giving each paragraph one clear central point, linking examples directly to that point, and using pronouns and transitions precisely rather than relying on broad connectors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant environmental vocabulary, including “deforestation,” “global warming,” “species,” and “population,” so the topic is generally clear. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “root cause” and “rapidly changing temperature.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, which sometimes makes the meaning difficult to follow. For example, “ending specie” is not a natural way to describe an animal at risk of extinction, and “provide awareness” is not the usual collocation. Spelling errors such as “enivronment” and “lifes” also reduce accuracy. Build a more precise set of environmental terms and check spelling and collocations during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “the ozone layer which protects the earth” and a conditional structure in “If it keeps on going like this.” However, complex sentences are often faulty, and errors in basic sentence construction occur frequently enough to affect clarity. Examples include “Some of them believe that it due to loss,” which is missing a verb, and the fragment “Which has lead to several problems.” The conclusion also contains the confusing construction “if we need humans need to survive.” Review verb forms and agreement, sentence boundaries, and the structure of clauses beginning with “which” or “if.” Aim to produce accurate complete sentences before adding more complexity.
