IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Whether some people argued that the extinction of a specific species of plants and animals is the major environmental problem or others considered other important environmental issue is of a considerable debate. In my opinion, apart from losing a particular species, there are more important problems, such as global warming.

On the one hand, there are some rationale why a lot of people argued that losing a species of any kinds is significant issue. Every species of plants and animals is an important part of an ecosystemn and food chain. When a species is no longer available in the food chain, it creates a disturbance for all of other species. As a result, this problem will lead to the extinction of another one due to the shortage of food. Ultimately, this will destroy our whole ecosystem. For example, people depend on plants and animals for their food, oxygen, and every other demand. If we lose a species of plants or animals, it will reduce our food source and the availability of oxygen. Also, the amount of carbon di oxide will increase in the environment which will create some other problems.

On the other hand, insteand of losing a species, we have some other important problems. One of the most significant problem is global warming. The temperature of this planet is increasing rapidly day by day. Eventually, the global warming problem makes our life more difficult by creating adverse conditions. It causes soil erosion problem, river bank problem, and making the life of coastal region people so difficult. And this problem is excerbated by human actions. For example, a research shown that more than half ot the region of bangladesh will be sinked due to the rising sea levels by 2050.

In conclusion, although losing a particular species of plants or animals is the significant environmental problem according to some people, others believed that there are some other important problenms too. And I think rising global warming is the most important environmental problem.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state your position clearly: you argue that other environmental problems, especially global warming, are more important. The discussion of species loss is relevant and explains how disruption to a food chain could affect ecosystems and food supplies. The global-warming paragraph also gives a concrete example concerning Bangladesh and rising sea levels. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the first paragraph makes several broad claims, while the second focuses almost entirely on global warming and gives limited explanation of why it outweighs species loss. The Bangladesh example would be more persuasive if its relevance and source were explained. Develop the comparison more explicitly and support key claims with clearer reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. The progression from species loss to global warming is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help identify the stages of the argument. Some linking is mechanical, however, and repeated use of “problem” and “this problem” makes connections less precise. The sentence beginning “And this problem is exacerbated by human actions” feels loosely attached to the preceding point, and the conclusion largely repeats the introduction rather than drawing the comparison together. Use more varied, precise referencing and connect each example directly to the claim it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant environmental vocabulary, including “ecosystem,” “food chain,” “global warming,” “soil erosion,” and “rising sea levels,” which allows you to discuss the topic clearly. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “adverse conditions.” However, inaccurate word choice, collocation, and spelling are noticeable: “some rationale,” “a species of any kinds,” “carbon di oxide,” and “will be sinked” are not natural or accurate forms. Repetition of general terms such as “problem” and “important” also limits precision. Build a reliable set of topic-specific collocations and check spelling and word forms; this will make your meaning more exact without requiring unnecessarily complex vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including conditional structures such as “If we lose a species…” and cause-and-effect clauses such as “When a species is no longer available…”. These help express relationships between ideas, and the overall meaning remains understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with agreement, articles, and verb forms. For example, “One of the most significant problem” needs a plural noun, while “a research shown” has an incorrect article and verb form. The opening sentence also shifts awkwardly between past and present forms, and “others believed” does not match the present-tense framing. Review subject–verb agreement and maintain consistent tense, while continuing to practise accurate complex sentences.
