IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

People have different views about whether core environmental problem of our present time is the loss of specific species of plants or animals. While others people say there are more significant environmental problems. I, believe that there are more environmental problems rather than extinct of particular species or plants.

There are number of reasons why main environment problem of our present time is not the losses of particular species and plans. One possible reason is that extinct plants and animals can not survive because they cannot adapt with the current atmosphere, while these plants and animals will be less impactful if even though these exist in this era. Once a species goes extinct we cannot bring back again naturally. For example, dinosaur is not existed because of the meteor that hit that earth it erased the whole species of dinosaur.

Despite the above arguments, it cannot be denied that there are more vital thing that causes environmental challenges. Nowadays, we are using more and more transportation like car, bus, motorbike and plane these transportation burn fossil fuel and that is releasing carbon-dioxide in the air. Moreover, dumping wastes on the river also causing several environmental damages. For example, industries like soap factories and cement factories discharge dangerous chemical into the river. Finally, deforestation is a vital cause of environmental pollution not only that but also rising number of world population creating disruption to environment.

In conclusion, although losses of some specific plans and animals causing environmental problem, I would say that there are more problem despite this

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You state a clear preference for broader environmental problems, and the paragraph on transport emissions, river pollution and deforestation gives relevant examples. However, the task asks you to discuss both views, and the case for species loss is not really explained: the claim that species may be less impactful if they still exist is unclear, while the dinosaur example describes extinction rather than why biodiversity loss is a major environmental concern. Your position also shifts in the conclusion, which ends unfinished and does not clearly restate your view. Develop the importance of species loss, explain why the other problems are more serious in your view, and finish with a complete, consistent conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the second body paragraph groups several environmental concerns together. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Finally” and “In conclusion” help signal movement between points. However, progression is uneven: the first body paragraph does not clearly build an argument about species loss, and the conclusion is incomplete, so the essay does not reach a clear ending. Some connections are also difficult to follow, particularly “while these plants and animals will be less impactful if even though these exist.” Organise each body paragraph around one view, explain the relationship between its examples, and use clear references and transitions rather than relying mainly on list-like sequencing.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant environmental vocabulary, including “fossil fuel,” “carbon-dioxide,” “deforestation,” “species” and “environmental challenges,” which allows you to address the topic. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “discharge dangerous chemical.” However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or repetitive: “losses of particular species,” “more vital thing” and “rising number of world population” do not express the intended ideas naturally. “Plans” is used where “plants” is meant, and “extinct” is sometimes used in place of the noun “extinction.” Build accuracy by learning common environmental collocations and checking word forms and spelling; this will make your ideas easier to understand.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a conditional structure beginning “Once a species goes extinct” and a contrast introduced by “although.” However, many sentences contain errors in basic grammar, and complex attempts are often difficult to follow. Examples include “There are number of reasons,” “dinosaur is not existed,” and “these transportation burn,” which show problems with articles, verb forms and subject–verb agreement. The final sentence is also incomplete, and punctuation is sometimes misplaced, as in “I, believe.” Practise building accurate subject–verb sentences first, then add subordinate clauses and check each sentence for a complete main clause and consistent verb forms.
