IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
According to many people, loss of specific species of plants and animals are a main environmental problem and the others argue that there are another environmental hazards can be seen oher than extinction of plants and animals. For maintain healthy environment, biodiversity plays a significant role. Also, we need to look after the other environmental problems as well. According to my opinion, protect biodiversity is the main thing to prevent most of the other natural disasters as well.
Firstly, due to mechanical revolution and massive urbanization, particular plants and animals faced a huge threat. They have been starting to extinct since this changes were started. The air pollution harm some birds and the other insects in the air. The massive water pollution occurs due to throw the factory wastes to nearby lakes. And it cause the animals in the water badly. As an example, most factories release murcurry to lakes and they deposit in the lungs of animals in the water. Then they died because the restriction of the airways. Furthermore, some studies shown that, the sound pollution badly affect for bats. They usually find their way to fly by generating sound waves. But with the sound polution they couldn't differentiate their sound waves from others. There are huge amount of bats died within a year in the urbanized areas. Also, people cut large amount of trees for constructions. It is not bearable to the eco-system and because of that more natural disasters occur and it causes to thr green house effect.
On the other hand, weneed to look after other natural environmental problems as well. These days increase of global temperature became a huge problem. It causes the melt of glaciers and form that the sea level may increased. It effects very badly in numerous ways. The little Islands may dissappear due to this. And also, more deserts generated due to high temperature. With the mechanical revolution it estimated that the most parts of the ozone layer become dissappers. The harmful rays from the sun come to the earth from that damaged area. So, we need to address all these areas to prevent the harm to the earth and the living beings in the earth.
In conclusion, we need to pay attention for both protection of biodiversity and the other natural disasters in the same way.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and give a position: you explain how pollution, habitat loss and other pressures threaten species, then discuss climate change and ozone depletion as wider environmental concerns. Your view that biodiversity protection can help prevent other environmental damage is relevant, and the conclusion returns to the need to address both. However, the two sides are not developed equally clearly. The first body paragraph gives several examples, but the second mainly lists effects of rising temperatures and ozone damage without explaining why these problems may be more important than species loss. Some claims, such as the link between biodiversity protection and preventing most natural disasters, also need clearer reasoning or support. Develop the comparison and explain your position more fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the discussion. Within paragraphs, however, ideas sometimes feel like a list rather than a connected argument. For example, the first body paragraph moves from air and water pollution to bats, tree cutting and the greenhouse effect without consistently showing how each point supports the main claim. Some links are also unclear, as in “And it cause the animals in the water badly.” Use fewer list-like transitions and add explicit explanations between examples so the reasoning progresses smoothly. References such as “this” should also identify their subject clearly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of environmental vocabulary, including “biodiversity,” “urbanization,” “glaciers,” “sea level,” and “ozone layer,” which allows you to discuss both views. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “sound waves” and “factory wastes.” However, inaccurate word choice, collocation and spelling are noticeable and sometimes make meaning less precise: “mechanical revolution,” “deposit in the lungs of animals,” and “the restriction of the airways” do not express the intended ideas naturally. Errors such as “murcurry,” “polution,” and “dissappear” also reduce accuracy. Build precision by checking common environmental collocations and choosing words that describe the process accurately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including cause-and-effect clauses and sentences beginning with “Although”-type contrasts, and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, grammatical errors occur across the response and sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Examples include subject–verb agreement in “loss … are” and “it cause,” incorrect verb forms in “They have been starting to extinct,” and tense or modal errors in “the sea level may increased.” Articles, plurals and sentence construction also need attention, as in “a huge threat” followed by “this changes.” Practise checking each sentence for a clear subject and correctly formed verb, then review agreement and tense, especially in longer sentences.
