IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Environmental safety and the probles are the major part of the discussion in the recent years. Many people believe that the major problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals, meanwhile concerns that there are other relevant environmental challanges too.In this essay, i will discuss both the views and state my opinion in favour of other important eniviromental problems.

Losing a species plants and familiar animals are dangerous for the food cycle of the world. The plants and animals are the ecosystem and the main source of the food generation in the world.Whenever ,there is a shortage of green lands such as plants that are eaten by herbivores ,they sufferr and die,Eventually the carnivores who are dependent on them also face challanges beacuse they dont find their food easily , as there will be limted alive species to be eaten. For example, in South Africa in 2018 as per NAT GEO, there was a huge decline in deers and bulls ,which affected the whole wildlife ,majorly lions and tigers across the nation due to shortage of particular species .

Envionmental hazards like global warming and extreme air pollution is also important to look after.Global warming causes climate changes in the world ,where as air pollution affects the people's health.Climate changes leads to flood and drought which can cause agricultural challanges to grow enough food to sustain and availaible for everyone.Same like air pollutiion is affecting the breathing capacity and challanges in young generation after COVID. In recent news, EL NINO is widely discussed across the globe, as it will create a major food shortage.

In my point of view the other environmentas like above discussed are crucial beacause ,if we cant grow food and maintain climate changes or tackle it, it will lead massacare of the people deaths in the coming years.

Thus ,saving particular species is important but taking steps for others problems like climate changes and air pollution is also important. So, people should be more focused to preserve and protect what they will need in future not only limited to particular plants and animals.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state a clear preference for broader environmental problems, especially climate change and air pollution. The discussion of species loss explains how disruption to food chains can affect predators, while the later paragraph links climate change with floods, droughts and food production. These are relevant reasons and examples. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the species-loss example is difficult to verify and its connection to the argument is not fully explained, while the effects of pollution and climate change are asserted more than explored. Your conclusion repeats your position but could explain more precisely why these threats are more urgent or far-reaching than species loss. Develop each main point with a clear, specific example and a fuller explanation of its consequences.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your opinion, and a conclusion. This makes the overall line of argument understandable. You also use linking expressions such as “For example,” “In my point of view,” and “Thus.” However, some connections feel mechanical or unclear, and several sentences contain multiple ideas without a clear progression. For instance, the discussion moves from air pollution to health effects and then to El Niño and food shortages without explaining the links between them. References such as “the other environmentas like above discussed” are also difficult to follow. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each example directly to the point it supports; vary transitions rather than relying on formulaic phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt relevant topic vocabulary, including “ecosystem,” “herbivores,” “carnivores,” “global warming,” and “air pollution,” which helps communicate the subject. There is also some effort to use less common terms such as “agricultural challenges.” However, spelling errors and inaccurate word choices are noticeable, including “probles,” “challanges,” “eniviromental,” and “massacare.” Some phrases are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “food generation,” “limted alive species,” and “breathing capacity and challanges.” These issues sometimes make the intended meaning less clear. Build accuracy by checking spelling and learning common environmental collocations, for example “food supply,” “living species,” and “pose a threat to public health.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “Whenever there is a shortage … they suffer and die” and a relative clause in “plants that are eaten by herbivores.” This shows some range, and the main ideas can generally be understood. However, errors in sentence construction, agreement, articles, and punctuation recur. For example, “Global warming and extreme air pollution is” needs a plural verb, while “Climate changes leads” also has a subject–verb agreement problem. Several sentences run together, as in the long food-chain explanation, and commas are often placed incorrectly or omitted. Practise building shorter, controlled sentences first, then combine them with accurate clauses. Check agreement and sentence boundaries during proofreading.
