IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
It is argued that the main environmental problem of current time is the extinction of plants and animals. But, Some people believe that there are also other environmental problems are there from which we are suffering. In my opinion, The rapid extinction of plants and animals is more important because they are the reason of other environmental problems.
If we think about the several environmental problem of this time, That are pollution, global warming and climate change. If we search about the reasons of these, We came to know that 90% of their reason is deforestation . Cutting the trees results in the removal of our natural air filter. For example, We are living in the era of modern technologies and industrialization, Automobile is the most used thing in now times, It releases chemical gases which includes carbon dioxide which damage our atmosphere. Same goes for the industries they release extreme chemicals and gases. Trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. So cutting of trees is the main reason of many environmental problems.
Also if we talk about how extinction of animals is the reason of other environmental problems. Nature works on the food chain system in case of animals. Every animal on the earth have its reason. Forexample, There are herbivors which eat grass and then, There are predators who eats herbivours and same in the case of insects, Some like lizards, They eat small bees and other small insects. fishes eat the bacteria and dirt in the water keeping water fresh. So in this way the food supply chain works. If some of animals escape from the chain it will disturb the nature system and this will results in the changing of climate which will make problems in tyhe environment.
In the end, We conclude that the main environmental problem is extinction and loss of the trees and the animals. If we take control on it, We canl overcome other environmental problems also.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You present a clear opinion that species loss is the more important problem, and you give relevant points about deforestation, pollution and food chains. However, the discussion of the opposing view is brief: pollution, global warming and climate change are listed, but their importance as problems in their own right is not explained. Your main argument also relies on broad claims, such as saying that 90% of the causes are deforestation, without support, and the link between animal extinction and climate change is not clearly demonstrated. To strengthen the response, explain both viewpoints more evenly, support claims with specific examples, and make the reasoning behind your conclusion more precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the ideas generally remain on the environmental topic. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow. The second paragraph moves from a list of environmental problems to deforestation and then to vehicles and industry, without clearly distinguishing the opposing view from your own argument. Connectors such as “Also” and “So” are repetitive, while phrases such as “If we think about” and “Same goes for” do not always make the relationship between points clear. Use topic sentences to signal each paragraph’s purpose, and organise examples so that each one directly supports the point being made.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “extinction,” “deforestation,” “carbon dioxide,” “predators” and “food chain,” which helps communicate the subject. The range is nevertheless limited and several expressions are inaccurate or awkward, sometimes making the intended meaning less clear. For example, “the removal of our natural air filter” is an imprecise way to describe the effects of tree loss, and “escape from the chain” does not clearly express species disappearing from an ecosystem. There are also spelling errors such as “herbivors,” “tyhe” and “canl.” Build a more precise environmental vocabulary and check spelling and collocations; for instance, describe species as “disappearing from” or “being removed from” a food chain.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt some longer sentences and use clauses to explain causes and examples, but the range of structures is limited and complex sentences are often faulty. Errors in agreement and sentence construction occur in examples such as “Every animal on the earth have its reason” and “predators who eats herbivours.” The opening also contains an incomplete or awkward construction: “there are also other environmental problems are there from which we are suffering.” Capitalisation and punctuation are inconsistent, particularly the unnecessary capitals after commas and the run-on sentence beginning “For example, We are living…”. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement, articles and sentence boundaries, then use a wider range of controlled complex sentences.
