IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The environmental problems occuring due to loss of particular species is widely debated issue these days. This essay will discuss both views, and i believe that there are more important environmental problems on earth, which are causing issues like global warming, climate change and rising sea levels.
Firstly, the issue of the global warming is causing a rise in the temprature, that is the main reason for the melting of glaciers. This process of melting ice will then lead towards the flood. The climate change is one of the by-products of global warming and due to this winter is shrinking and the global temprature is increasing. For example, in year 2024, Pakistan faced an all time disasterous flood in its history whose after effects were brutal, about 5 million people were left without the houses and the food, moreover, the flood causes a food shortage because Pakistan is an agricultural country and majority of the crops were destroyed. As a result, there are more important environmental problems.
In addition, the loss of particular species of plants and animals are one of the reason for environmental problem, but it is not the only problem. It is worth accepting that the complete extinction of any species causes an issue within the eco-system. For instance, there were dinosaurs on the planet earth and they lived here for the millions of year, and now they are extinct and there extinction have not caused any trouble to the environment. Therefore, there are more important issues then particular species to be discussed regarding environment.
In conclusion, there are bundle of problems related to the environment that should be resolved. The others problems are more concering which are causing trouble and disturbing earth.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You state a clear overall view: other environmental problems are more important, and you give relevant examples involving global warming, melting glaciers and flooding in Pakistan. However, the discussion is uneven. The paragraph on climate-related problems is developed with consequences and an example, while the view that species loss is a major problem receives only brief treatment. The dinosaur example does not convincingly support the point that extinction is harmless: it does not explain the ecological effects of current species loss, and the claim that it caused no environmental trouble is unsupported. To strengthen the response, explain why biodiversity loss matters, then compare its effects with those of climate change before reaching your conclusion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “In addition” and “In conclusion” help identify the stages of the argument. However, progression within the essay is sometimes repetitive: the claim that other problems are more important is repeated at the end of both body paragraphs without a fuller comparison. Some links between ideas are also unclear, particularly the move from the dinosaur example to the conclusion that species loss is less important. Use each paragraph to develop one distinct view, and make the relationship between cause, example and evaluation explicit. Clearer referencing and less formulaic repetition would make the argument easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant environmental vocabulary, including “global warming,” “melting of glaciers,” “rising sea levels” and “extinction,” so the topic is generally clear. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “by-products” and “agricultural country.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “lead towards the flood,” “without the houses,” and “there are bundle of problems.” Spelling errors such as “temprature,” “disasterous” and “concering” are noticeable. Aim for more precise, natural combinations—for example, “lead to flooding” and “left homeless”—and check spelling carefully. This would help express your ideas with greater clarity and flexibility.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a relative clause in “whose after effects were brutal” and a cause-and-effect construction beginning “because Pakistan is an agricultural country.” However, control is inconsistent, and errors sometimes make sentences difficult to process. For example, “The environmental problems … is widely debated issue” has problems with agreement and article use, while “the loss … are one of the reason” has agreement and plural errors. The long sentence about the flood also joins several ideas without clear punctuation. Practise checking subject–verb agreement, articles and singular/plural forms, and divide long sentences where needed. More accurate control of these patterns would make your argument clearer.
