IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
In recent years the environmental degredation increase rapidly due to some developmental changes which indirectly effects the flora and faunna. some people believe that pollution is most crucial problem of environment. I believe that rapid advancement directly effect the ecosystem.
On the one hand, the loss of specific plants and animals is a major environmental threat. Every species play crucial role in a ecosystem, and the disappaearence of one can disrupt the entire food chain. For example, if bees become extinct pollination will stop and nearly 70% of crops could fail leading to the food crisis. Furthermore, many medicines are derived from plants and animals. if these species are lost, we may lost potential cures for diseases like cancer. Therefore protecting biodiversity is very important.
On the other hand, I believe that global warming and pollution directly effects the animals and plants. The change in climate can effect the crops and plant growth such as in high temperature the transpiration from plants is very higher so that why they greater of amount of water required during the summer season. For instance, in world the climate change is change rapidly, Pakistan experienced devasting floods in 2022 due to global warming and melting glaciers which left millions homeless. Similarly, air pollutionis a direct threat to human health. Cities like Lahore often have an air quality index above 400, causing severe respiratory diseases and deaths. In addition, the loss of species is often symptom rather than a root cause. The main drivers of extinction is deforestation, pollution and climate chane itself.
In a conclusion, while a loss of particular plants and animals is undeniably a serious problems that disrupts the ecosystem, I believe that broader issues such as climate change and air pollution are more important threaten all living beings and are the primary causes of biodiversity loss.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address both views and make your own position clear: you recognise species loss as serious, while arguing that climate change and pollution are broader, more important threats. The examples of pollination, potential medicines, Pakistan’s 2022 floods and Lahore’s air quality help extend your points, and your conclusion returns to the central comparison. This fits a response that covers the task with a clear position and relevant support. Some claims, however, are asserted rather than fully explained: the crop-failure estimate and the link between global warming and the floods would benefit from careful qualification or clearer reasoning. The discussion of the first view is also less developed than the second. Explain more directly why species loss itself might be considered the main problem before contrasting it with its underlying causes.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. The signposts “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In a conclusion” make the progression easy to follow, while examples generally appear alongside the points they support. This coherent arrangement is a strength. However, some links between ideas feel mechanical, and the second body paragraph moves quickly from crop growth to floods, air pollution, and the causes of extinction. More explicit transitions would show how each example supports the comparison. Referencing is occasionally unclear, as in “so that why they greater of amount of water required,” where the relationship between the conditions and the plants’ needs is difficult to follow. Group related causes and effects more deliberately to make the progression smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “biodiversity,” “food chain,” “pollination,” “transpiration,” “air quality index,” and “respiratory diseases.” These choices help communicate the environmental focus and show attempts to use more specific language. At times, however, word choice, collocation, and spelling are inaccurate: “environmental degredation,” “faunna,” “disappaearence,” and “climate chane” contain spelling errors, while “the environmental problem of environment” and “the change in climate is change rapidly” are awkward or imprecise. These errors do not prevent understanding, but they limit fluency and precision. Check spelling carefully and learn common combinations such as “a major environmental problem,” “climate is changing rapidly,” and “species become extinct.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including conditional structures such as “if bees become extinct …” and a relative clause in “which left millions homeless.” This gives the response some structural variety, and the main ideas are usually understandable. However, errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction recur. For example, “Every species play” should use a singular verb, “the main drivers … is” has a subject–verb mismatch, and “we may lost” needs the base form after “may.” The sentence beginning “The change in climate can effect the crops” also becomes difficult to control as it continues. Aim for accurate basic clauses first, then build longer sentences with clear subjects and verbs; proofread agreement and modal verb forms.
