IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is irrefutable that there has been a rapid decline of several palnts and animal species since past few years and some people consider this as the main environment problem but others argue that there are various other essential problems to be tackled. This essay intends the discuss both the views. I, however, agree with the latter view of the given statement.

To begin with, it is highly understandable that some people opine species distinction as a major environmental issue. There is a food chain present in our natural world and every organism is a part of it. According to science, in this chain, the higher category of species feed on the lower category and the cycle continues. The loss of a particular species can disturb the whole cycle resulting in a massive increase of other animals. For instance, the distinction of deers can lead the wildlife to appear in cities and living areas. the loss of several rare plant species might affect the production of medications and cures to various diseases.

Secondly, there are several other major problems that should be focused on such as the damage caused by pollution on the Earth's atmosphere, global warming, the use of plastic, deforestation and harmful gases in the air. Another major concern is the declining amount of pure water and fossil fuels which are necessary for life.

Moreover, while most of these problems cannot be solved easily but the distiction of species can be controlled by scientists with several ways such as DNA and gene reproduction and replication. There is also a belief that the loss of various species is forced because they are considered harmful for the environment such as poisonous insects, reptiles, wild animals harmful for humans and insect eating or harmful plants.

To conclude, loss of several plant and animal species is negative for environment but it is not the major problem and can be controlled easily.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both perspectives and state a clear view in the introduction: you agree that other environmental problems are more important. The discussion of species loss is relevant, especially the explanation of how disrupting a food chain can affect other organisms, and you give examples involving deer and medicinal plants. You also identify wider concerns such as pollution, global warming, deforestation, and water scarcity. However, these other problems are mostly listed rather than explained, so the comparison with species loss is not fully developed. The claim that species loss can be controlled easily through gene replication, and that some losses are forced, is also asserted without sufficient support. Develop one or two major alternatives with specific consequences and examples, and qualify claims that are not universally true.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, a further point, and a conclusion. Sequencing phrases such as “To begin with,” “Secondly,” and “Moreover” help readers follow the discussion. However, the progression is sometimes mechanical, and the paragraph beginning “Moreover” shifts from solutions to species loss to whether some species are harmful, making its central purpose less clear. The conclusion restates your position but does not bring together the main reasons behind it. Some connections between claims also need to be made explicit—for example, explain how the listed problems compare in scale or urgency with biodiversity loss. Use clearer topic sentences and link each supporting example directly to the paragraph’s main point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of environmental vocabulary, including “food chain,” “global warming,” “deforestation,” “fossil fuels,” and “medications.” This allows you to discuss both biodiversity and broader environmental concerns. However, several inaccurate word choices, collocations, and spelling errors reduce precision: “species distinction” is used where “species extinction” or “loss of species” is intended, and “main environment problem” should be “main environmental problem.” Other examples include “palnts,” “distiction,” and “pure water.” Some phrases, such as “higher category of species,” are also imprecise for describing predators and prey. Aim for accurate, natural collocations and proofread spelling; choosing a precise term is more effective than using a more elaborate but unclear phrase.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including cause-and-effect clauses such as “The loss of a particular species can disturb the whole cycle resulting in…” and a concession beginning “while most of these problems…”. Meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “This essay intends the discuss” has an incorrect infinitive construction, and “while most of these problems cannot be solved easily but…” combines two contrasting structures unnecessarily. There are also issues with sentence boundaries and capitalization, as in “living areas. the loss…”. Review verb patterns, clause linking, and punctuation, and check that each sentence has a clear grammatical structure. More consistently accurate complex sentences would make your reasoning easier to follow.
